“Good old fashioned hospitality and service”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 12, 2013

We stayed on a two night break between Christmas and New Year. It was an excellent deal so we thought we would probably get a smaller room but we had a really spacious bedroom overlooking the golf course at the back of the hotel. It even had a little balcony although it was too cold to sit out. Others have mentioned that it is a little dated and that is the case but the room was spotlessly clean, two large wardrobes with ample hangers, plenty of towels, extra towels for the pool, mineral water, sherry, and tea/coffee making facilities. There is a dress code at dinner and men are requested to wear a jacket and tie. There was a pianist playing until about 9 pm and the whole ambiance of the restaurant was relaxing and friendly. We booked a half board deal and it was excellent value for money. The food was fresh and tasty. The wine selection was also excellent, with plenty of choice if you wanted half bottles or glasses and not as overpriced as many hotels we've visited of this standard. The staff were all helpful, whether it was at reception or in the bar and restaurant. We played 11 holes of golf and the course was in pretty good condition considering the wet weather. It is the kind of place that is nicely old fashioned and comfortable - the kind of place that you want to return to again and again.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front will have views over the golf course and the lake. Rooms at the back also have vi...

We stayed here to break up our long drive from Worcestershire to Aberdeen and wasn't disappointed. We wanted a quality hotel that was quiet and comfortable. We booked a half board deal that represented good value for money. The bedroom was superb, although a little dated, the quality of the fittings was excellent and you could have played five-a-side in there it was so huge. Service was absolutely excellent, the food was fresh tasty and hot. The whole experience was one that give off an air of quality. We will definitely return.

Room Tip: I think all the rooms are exceptional

The level of service in this well decorated, very clean ,and comfortable hotel is excellent. Set in woodland surroundings through the night it is sooo peaceful. This was our first visit but it won't be the last. Our bedroom was very spacious with a large bay window overlooking the grounds and part of the golf course. The bathroom was large enough to hold a paty in and the shower big enough for two. The restaurant offers a range of well cooked and presented delicous food food and individual requests are met with a smile

Staff couldn't have been more helpful in organising a St Andrew's Dinner night for 85 people. The food arrived at the tables hot and the Collop of Venison was outstanding. Kippers for breakfast were a challenge for Desperate Dan, a real plateful and delicious. We didn't explore any other facilities at the hotel but will comment further when I do so as we will be back. Well done and keep going Bob and the staff

Having seen the hotel in the Herald and reading some reviews four of us made the decision to book. So glad we did. Great welcome from Josephine on arrival, and great first impression of the hotel. I would agree with some other reviews that the hotel is slightly old fashioned but for us this only added to our stay. Our room was very large, clean and comfortable, the food was excellent with a good choice of dishes. All the staff gave first class service and nothing was too much trouble for them. The grounds of the hotel are well maintained and we enjoyed walking round them, and did see a red squirrel. I would recommend the Cally Palace Hotel to anyone and hope to return in the future. A big thank you to all the staff especially Josephine for making our stay so special.

On arrival at this beautiful hotel set amidst the hills of Galloway overlooking its own golf course and lake you are transported back to an age of elegance style and service rarely found in today's hotels. The ambience within created by the staff under the manager from the reception, the porters, barstaff and restaurant staff as well as those who keep the rooms and spacious public areas clean and comfortable is warm and caring and you are enveloped in its old world charm. The rooms are wonderful and spacious with views to die for. No request is too much. The restaurant cannot be faulted for its cuisine which sources local fresh produce and is worthy of Masterchef and satisfies the most discerning palate. The service is second to none. The pool area is spotless, the golf course private and right outside the door. Having stayed here in all weathers you are assured of a warm welcome and a taste of life in your own country pile! You are at home.

My wife and I stayed for 3 nights from the 31st October. Our room was extremely large and had a wonderful view over the 1st tee of the hotels own golf course. The decor was typical of a Scottish country house hotel and was in first class condition.
The bathroom was also very large and could have had a larger shower cubicle given the space available.
We dined at the hotel each night and the food was wonderful. It was always piping hot and well cooked and presented.
The wine menu suited our tastes and was pleasantly moderately priced given what some hotels charge.
The Cally grill on a morning was a brilliant way to start the day. Always hot and well cooked. Just enough to set you up for the day ahead. The staff were all wonderful. Nothing was too much trouble for any of them. The young guys that ran the bar at night made you feel especially welcome and had great senses of humour.
We did play a round on the golf course and would maybe like to try it when it is a bit drier. For quite a short course it is taxing.
The forest walks, red squirrels and surrounding countryside make it a great part of the country to visit. I would recommend the Cally hotel to anyone.
