“Excellent venue for a few relaxing days whether or not you are a golfer”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 25, 2011

This hotel stands gloriously in its own grounds surrounded by a remarkably good golf course, dense woods and well regarded gardens. The original house boasts the best bedrooms, as nice as are available anywhere, perfect for couples desiring a few days away from it all, perhaps looking forward to exploring Dumfries and Galloway's fascinating environment. However, the rooms in the Forest Wing are also spacious and well appointed ideally suited to golfers who enjoy good food and a few liquid refreshments, of which there is a varied and interesting selection, after cooling off in the well appointed leisure area and swimming pool. Breakfast is typical Scottish breakfast with one difference from some hotels, it is cooked personally for you. Dinner affords a varied menu, different each evening, and also comprises fresh food cooked to you liking. Each dish is presented as the chef has prepared it but a selection of other vegetables is also available to complement this. Interestingly, each diner can select as many, or as few, biscuits from a biscuit box if he, or she, orders biscuits and cheese ensuring that this popular choice suits every taste and appetite. We have been regularly for over twenty years and hope to return often in the future. We know that we will continue to enjoy a warm welcome and first class service throughout the hotel although we accept the one limitation, it is perhaps not the most exciting venue for our young grandchildren.

Room Tip: Ask for a room, with twin bathroom facilities and also a lounge area, on the second floor of the ori...

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our week's stay. The views from the hotel over its golf course and the lake are stunning.
We found all the staff very helpful - nothing was too much trouble for them.
Our room was traditionally decorated but it was in keeping with the age and theme of the hotel. It was kept spotlessly clean and smelled fresh.
The swimming pool was large, well maintained but never crowded. There was a jacuzzi. The gym, although small, was under-utilised but it did have "one of each of the machines" that most keen keep fit enthusiasts would use.
Whilst the majority of guests were in the "autumn" of their years there were also several families staying with children.
The "jacket and tie" dress code for dinner did seem a bit formal at first but it did have the advantage of making dinner a special occasion as everyone looked very smart. The food cooked by Jamie the chef was delicious - some of the best we have eaten anywhere- and well worth dressing up for!

This is our 2nd visit this year, this time with my Inlaws. I agree with other comments that the rooms are more a kin to a old peoples retirement home.Dated and needing a HUGE update.
Our room in the Forrest wing again which was ideal to get out to the car for the dogs that we had with us this time. The 2 rooms were both booked as Doubles.... but ours had twin beds shoved together as previously they were made as a huge King sized bed. My Inlaws was made as a double NOT 2 singles shoved together.
Pool & jaccuzzi excellant ideal after a game of golf.
We only had 1 round this time, course was prepared for winter, so hollow tynned and very wet in places, but still a test of golf.
Dinner was as good as before but our major moan was where we were seated. Yes near to the window but shoved up to a pillar. A small table was only suitable for 2 people but not 4 adults. We did complain but the Manager said he wished to place us close to the window for the view.....But it was dark outside !!!!
Good service all round from the moment you arrive and staff are all excellant.
Cally has its plus's and its minuses but and all round good Hotel.

Room Tip: Forrest wing ideal side door to outside if you have dogs in the car. A room looking to the 18th Gre...

Arrived to quite impressive grounds and hotel entrance. Staff were welcoming and helpful. However, we were shown to our "deluxe" room which was large but extremely dated and resembled a nursing home. The room smelt musty and damp. The bathroom was also dated and damp smelling. I regret that we did not complain as we arrived just in time to get "dressed up" for dinner. The dress code for dinner is ridiculous, and something I have not came across even in 5* hotels! This weekend was a gift from friends which probably affected our decision not to complain about our room. I took my gym kit but the "gym" was a treadmill, bike, rowing machine and cross trainer in a room. This could be a stunning hotel but the rooms really let it down. At present this is not a hotel for younger guests and was full of elderly people. Overall disappointing!

My partner and I visited on Valentine's Day for dinner. The food and wine were delicious... Not to mention the romantic atmosphere due to the traditional decor, soft lighting, the fabulous pianist. Staff were friendly and attentive and the picturesque countryside in which the hotel is set made it a definite place to return to.

Wanted a quiet weekend playing golf and relaxing. Got both in spades at this hotel. Hotel a bit on the old fashioned side but incredible swetting in wooded and parkland grounds. A golf course that is quite special in its setting and exclusive to hotel guests. The weather could have been kinder but not the hotel staff. All were extremely courteous and friendly from check-in to check-out taking in bar, restaurant, and room service. Food was excellent and it was obvious that many guests were regulars. My wife and I will return and hopefully experience a great course in better weather.

Room Tip: Book early. Our choice was limited but nevertheless satisfactory

We always look forward to our stays at the Cally Palace and have never been disappointed. The rooms are excellent, the food delicious, and the pool and spa are very relaxing after a round of golf on the course which has beautiful scenery and some fairly tricky holes. The staff are always smiling and pleasant and nothing is too much trouble. One of the very few places where gents wear jacket and tie at dinner, which makes the dining experience that bit more special.
