“Consistently great........”
Reviewed April 15, 2011

We've been going to Cally Palace for about 6 years and visit a couple of times a year. We love it. Staff are always friendly and helpful, rooms are large and well appointed and the food is excellent - never had a bad course, never mind meal.

Bob, the manager, is very good. Clearly runs a tight ship and puts his customers first. He's happy to make a wine recommendation (Shiraz was great!) and managed to get me an Ecclefechan tart which wan't on the menu!! Thanks Bob.

Facilities excellent with a swimming pool and lovely golf course which is well kept and challenging for the novice.

Highly recommended and excellent value for money too.

We loved it. We have been before and we found that this time everything was just as marvellous as last time (August 2010) Staff were just fantastic and were always ready with a smile ,nothing ever seemed to be too much trouble. I only gave a four star sleep rating because I felt that proper feather pillows would have made it all perfect

We called in our old haunt after an absence of a couple of years, to find it just as comfortable, friendly and relaxing as ever. Having been to the Cally a number of times over the years, on our own, with friends, and with a growing family at various stages, we have never had a disapointment. And we do not play golf! We just like good old fashioned relaxing service, where nothing (reasonable) is too much trouble, and where you come away refreshed and wanting to stay longer - that is the Cally. When our kids can afford it, they will also be back. The food is great; not urban pretentious, just good solid cooking using local ingredients wherever possible. Not a plastic bag of pretentious rubbish in sight.
The surrounding area is superb, and well worth close exploration.
I looked at some of the negative feedback, and wonder what they were looking for, or what their outlook on life is. We over 60s (just!) do not smell, soil the furniture, or generally aggravate younger people, as some seem to think. Much the reverse in my experience. I suppose the Cally will not suit the southern urban chattering classes, although when we were part of that group (grown up and better now, thanks), we thoroughly enjoyed our stays - something different from the usual packaged plastic. Maybe we were more adventurous.

Worried about the tie at dinner routine but when in Rome etc! Food, room, pool ( and pianist at dinner)all excellent . The Cally 'does what it says on the tin' and judging by our experience it does it very well. It is not chic minimalism but its constituency of guests don't want that! We appreciated the differences. We are not golfers but know and like the South West of Scotland very much. The Cally provided an excellent base for our meanderings with friendly and helpful staff providing all we needed to facilitate that.

The service provided by this hotel was exquisite. Nothing was too much touble, and believe me I put some demands on the staff! ALL the food in the hotel was fresh, locally sourced produce. The golf course was for the exclusive use of McMillan Hotel guests. There was another local hotel in the chain. The course was barely used however, which, despite the multitude of stuning courses nearby, I found strange, as it was of itself an excellent parkland course. Two problems - 1 - it got too soggy very quickly, and 2 - the green staff should really have made an effort to clean up the leaves in target areas of the course, as this made losing a ball where you would most certainly not ordinarily do so, an inevitablilty. If you come here and play, one tip, make yourselves a local rule - balls quite definitely lost in leaves do not count as a lost ball, and simply drop one without penalty. The hotel also has an excellent pool, jacuzzi and sauna, which were proving more popular than the golf with the guests.

Stayed for 3 nights mid October. Hotel was booked by my parents for us to meet up to celebrate their anniversary. Prior to visit was a bit worried by some of the reviews that, as a couple in our in mid 30s who tend to go long-haul (must get around to those reviews!), that we'd be underwhelmed by British hospitality or find the hotel old fashioned. Couldn't be more wrong!

This hotel was actually a breath of fresh air from the minimalist, slick and anonymous hotels we tend to stay in - service was excellent and friendly all round (from emailed requests prior to arrival to room service coffees - nothing was ever a problem or delivered without grace and a smile).

The superior room (74) we stayed in was large, clean and very comfortable with triple aspect windows, and in the main house. My parent's suite next door (75) was also lovely, with a separate seating area with great views. This is an older building, but it had everything we needed (clean and plenty of space, controllable heat, tea and coffee and a comfortable bed ) - and some things we didn't need but were a nice touch and appreciated (bottled water, sherry, robes and slippers, selection of books and Sky Sports). Being an old building it felt much more private - no paper thin walls. We slept so well every night, and the view over the golf course, lake and hills and red squuirrels when pulling back the curtains in the morning was breathtaking (we were blessed with gorgeous autumnal weather). Housekeeping was efficient and unobtrusive.

Food- I was surprised by how good it really was. Lovely fish and cooked breakfasts in the morning with a full range of cereal and fruit, breads, juices etc. Dinner was great every night. I like my meat and I like it rare- the chef got it right every night. Starters, soups and puds were also imaginative and well executed. We ordered extra veg and to be honest didn't eat many of them - the meal is more than filling without them, even for big eaters like my family. That said, ordering the veg was no problem. Can't fault the food, wine list or the service - even the managers took the time to serve tables and get to know people and share a joke or two. Bar staf were also friendly and attentive.

The cardio based gym was small but all that was needed for a short break as it wasn't busy - but maybe a multi gym or free weights in place of the leg curl machine would be a better use of space - and a water dispenser is essential in my opinion and would be a an addition around the sauna/gym area I would certainly suggest. Pool was nice and we saw the water being tested regularly - stayed around the same time as the last reviewer and we didn't have any problems with our eyes, so perhaps it was just unlucky for the last reviewer?

Grounds are gorgeous and surrounding forest proveded a few lovely walks. We would definitely like to return as we feel 3 nights was not enough to see and do everything, but we did leave very relaxed and refreshed (and a few pounds heavier!) and my parents (early 60s) seemed to thoroughly enjoy their weekend too. Will try to upload some photos soon.

I took my sister here for dinner on 23/10/10. The meal was lovely and the service was second to none. The only comments I would make are the cruets had not been cleaned in a while and the female who appeared to be the restuarant manager was not very friendly and should learn to smile.
