“Good location but overpriced!”
Reviewed July 25, 2013

Good location and good breakfast. We stayed in a twin room that was a good size, unfortunately the compliments stop there, the hotel as a whole but mainly the room was very dated, as such there were parts of the room and indeed the bathroom that looked grubby. The room was cleaned well but certain things need changing such as the bathroom to make this hotel worth the money. The stay was fine but not worth the price they charge per night, also a little warning. When booking through a third party company be wary not to be charged twice! We had an issue where the agency payment had not been received by the hotel so they also asked for payment, although they dealt with this well I am concerned that had I not been sure of this i could have ended up paying double.

First time staying here and definitely would return. Our room was a good size, warm and comfortable with clean beds, but could definitely do with refurbishing and new mattresses. More than made up for by the food. Our dinner was excellent, particularly the scallops and black pudding - highly recommended! Breakfast was also a very high standard. The staff were all extremely friendly and helpful, so many thanks

In short, TV broken, not heating, no hot water, UHT milk 7 months out of date, wallpaper hanging off, whole place smelled awful (damp), numerous large stains on an un-hoovered carpet. Dried out fry up in the morning (obviously left drying up under the grill)All in all, the worst hotel I've stayed in. Only saving grace was the food on the dinner menu. I originally booked for a night and phoned the day before to say i would book in that night too as there was no booking for the family room we were in, told they couldn't do a deal, so would rather the room was empty than take a discount, strange. Bad management!!

We had a one night stay. The room was dreadful- damp, wallpaper peeling, no heating in ancient bathroom, filthy windows - all for £ 80. When we complained we were told " Oh they put you in the worst room in the Hotel" says it all. We have a Lodge nearby and love the Area and spent many happy times at THE MURRAY ARMS but never again.

Room Tip: Avoid number 20

Went to a 70th birthday here last night what a great time food was excellent company was great. The wine was flowing so much we decided to stay lovely room very clean tastefully decorated. I would recommend anyone holidaying in or around Gatehouse to consider staying here.

Room Tip: It is nice to have a room with nice furniture not every room the same.

We called in 'on spec' just as the restaurant was about to finish serving lunch but we were made very welcome by a most charming young lady who gave us an option of seating and then produced a heater to warm us up (we had been walking in sub-zero conditions!)! The meal was delicious - the food, freshly cooked, arrived in super-quick time and was obviously made with high quality locally-sourced ingredients.

We can highly recommend this hotel, both for the excellent food and for the very friendly and efficient staff. 5* dining!!! Very many thanks for accommodating us at the last minute!
