“Good quality”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 8, 2013

Stayed for one night on a business trip and found the place to be very good. Easy parking, very friendly staff and good quality rooms. If you use a satnav to get to the hotel, make sure you input the postcode rather than the road name - a colleague of mine ended up in the middle of nowhere as a result..! Breakfast is good quality.Bar and reception staff friendly and efficient.

We got a two nights for the price of one deal for a break, we were glad we paid half price as if i'd paid full price i'd have been disappointed. Nice hotel but certainly not one of the best.
When viewing the photos we imagined it was in the country but no its on a business complex with the university and a church as well as some businesses.
Service was good enough but don't be fooled by the pictures, this is not a romantic getaway.

Disappointing to see your comments but thank you for your honest feedback
The larger area around Dumfries is in a rural setting surrounded by rolling hills and not too far from the Solway coast. The landscaped country estate we sit on does indeed contain various business but all contained in Victorian sandstone buildings varying in size, not a modern business complex. Also on the site are beautiful rock gardens a short walk away from the hotel. Many of our guests visit these gardens as do most couples that use the church for their wedding ceremonies especially for photographs. In ending appreciate people have different views and thank you again for yours.

We found the Aston around five years ago, returning from a long Atlantic flight, we were so exhausted driving home to Scotland, we thought let's pop into Dumfries and stay overnight.,the Premeir inn was full and the receptionist suggested we try the Aston, on that occasion we stayed five nights, we have been back many times, the most recent stay was weekend of 15th and 16th of February.
The Aston is situated on the Crichton Estate follow signs for the Infirmary, the hotel is not far past it.
The grounds are fantastic, the hotel is quiet and we love the comfy bed and superb power shower, The staff are so pleasant, we are returning again in June and cannot wait till then.
we have had many excellent offers from them, you can find them on itison.com
The area has some superb golf courses and you cannot go wrong with this hotel as a base.

Room Tip: You can request a room overlooking the garden, that's better than looking out on car park.

The weather forecast for the weekend looked quite good so on a whim we selected Dumfries as a destination for a short break, as they like to say in the travel trade. Dumfries wasn't all that marvellous, despite its excellent location and river running through it.. The burghers of Dumfries have presumably destroyed most of the charm it once had since Rabbie Burns and JM Barrie lived there – they apparently loved it; Burns has a grand, if rather gaudily white, mausoleum in the graveyard just along the road from the house where he lived and died. After wandering around the town (it probably would look better in the sunshine - the weather forecast wasn't desperately accurate!) we went off to find our hotel, which turned out to be a couple of miles or so from the town centre. Well, we were rather surprised to discover that our hotel was in a lunatic asylum. Mind you, it was a very splendid lunatic asylum – started in 1834 as Scotland’s last and greatest, set in 100 acres of parkland. The hotel was built just a few years ago, attached to one of the original buildings, and excellent it was too, with pleasant staff, good breakfasts, clean and comfortable. Needless to say, since care in the community became the treatment regime of choice for the mentally ill, this huge hospital has long been emptied of the insane (although the couple next to us at breakfast looked a bit strange. Oh, ha ha, John) and is now a business park and a higher education establishment, plus function hall and various other things. It also had a huge church, which was more like a cathedral, set in an arboretum. All very impressive. We had a very pleasant dinner in an excellent brasserie overlooking the park, and were extremely happy with our off the cuff choice, which was very good value for money. I slept incredibly well, virtually unheard of for me in a hotel – I’ve become a convert to a luxurious soft mattress!

Thank you for feedback. As you would expect pleased you enjoyed your experience at the Aston but regret you found Dumfries the way you did. Can I suggest if you were to visit again you explore the countryside of Dumfries & Galloway where there are many visitor attractions and delightful scenery which I am sure you would enjoy.. Hopefully we can do better with the weather. Thanks for taking time to write which is very much appreciated. Kind Regards Mike Phillips

Just back from our second stay at the Aston. Hotel - beautiful building set in peaceful surroundings on the Crichton Estate, ten minute bus ride or £5 taxi ride from centre of Dumfries. Some public areas could do with a little re-furb, but otherwise fine. Rooms - we paid extra for a superior room, and it was well worth it. Spacious, clean, comfortable, well-appointed, with large comfortable bed, and brilliant shower in the bathroom. Food - very enjoyable with a good choice. Well cooked and well presented. Wine list a bit limited for my taste. Staff - Absolutely excellent in all areas. Pleasant, attentive, helpful. Nothing was too much trouble. All in all a very enjoyable, relaxing week-end spent in peaceful surroundings. Good for the soul.

Room Tip: Stayed in a normal room on first visit, and it was very good, but stayed in a superior room this tim...

I've been going to the Aston for a few years now and can thoroughly recommend it. The food is excellent, try the haggis at breakfast! The rooms are fantastic and the showers are the best I've been in. Staff are wonderful, very attentive and pleasant.

Room Tip: All the rooms I've been in were great.

Thanks for this positive review on your recent two night stay. Delighted that you dined both nights with us and enjoyed your experience. We try to change specials each day but in quieter times could be two which appears to have happened on this occasion. Certainly look forward to seeing you again. Will keep you posted with any special Leisure Break offers. Best regards Mike Phillips
