“Amazing setting for wedding”

Attraction details
Owner description: With its moat, twin towered gatehouse and imposing battlements, this awe-inspiring castle is the epitome of the medieval stronghold and one of the finest castles in Scotland. Although ruined, Caerlaverock is still a substantial structure and you can explore many different features within its unique triangular ground plan. The castle's turbulent history owes much to its proximity to England which brought it into the brutal cross-border conflicts and you can enjoy a fascinating siege warfare exhibition complete with reconstructions of medieval siege engines. After exploring the castle enjoy delicious home baking and freshly ground coffee in the castle's tearoom which is open during the summer and at weekends in the winter. Little adventurers will love the castle-themed adventure park and if one castle is not enough for you, you will find the foundations of another, earlier, castle visible at the end of a nature trail through the woods to the south.

Absolutely speechless when we walked over the draw bridge into the centre of the ruins.... AMAZING venue to have a wedding and the sun most certainly did shine on us that day. Was very romantic especially with only 30 very close friends & family at the ceremony. Worth wondering around just as a tourist.

Loved the moat surrounding the castle and the spiral stair up to the top of the tower. The audio visual display of the castle siege is also well worth visiting, as is the coffee shop.

Caerlaverock Castle is a great attraction to take friends and family to see, preferably on a sunny day. It tells of the struggle between England and Scotland in the years of Edward I, and how it was held by 60 braw Scotsmen against an English army before finally falling. It is a ruin but is looked after by Historic Scotland (I think), and there is a wealth of detail in the good, low-cost guidebook that is for sale at the shop. I visited it again yesterday on a glorious early December day with visiting family from New Zealand and once more enjoyed the ambience there. A good visit!

Stunning moated ruin, seen at its best on a sunny November morning. Plenty to see but only one set of tower stairs to ascend, not really getting anywhere. Well worth a visit when in the general area but perhaps not worth a special long-distance trip.

Amazing countryside attraction. Great open space a breath of fresh air, literally. Just drive there with your car, not that far from dumfries town centre.
