I drive my friends mad (well, those who aren't already mad) by declaring - rather randomly - who is Poet of the Day - but if you're in Dumfries and Galloway, there's no question: Poet of the Day is Robert Burns. So when I found myself in Dumfries for the first time one late afternoon and discovered that I could visit Robert Burns' house, I was off... There is a whole trail of places associated with Robert Burns which you can visit in Dumfries, with details available from the Tourist Information office. The house itself is small, neat and well-presented, and is full of books and other artefacts associated with Burns and his wife Jean. If you already love Burns' poetry, you will find this a very special place, whilst if you are not familiar with his life and work, it's well worth paying a quick visit - it's free of charge - to get a feel for what life was like in eighteenth-century Dumfries.
