We stayed here over Easter for a couple of days. What an amazing place to stay! Susan and George are so welcoming and helpful. The rooms are beautifully done out, great breakfast and very relaxing atmosphere. Great pub just down the road with excellent food. If you are into walking, beautiful scenery and bird watching this is the place to be. The front garden extends onto the shoreline with a lovely summer house where you can enjoy the views and watch birds, whales, porpoises even otters if you are lucky, with a beverage in hand. Walks along the beach are incredible with views across to the Lakes and of Criffel and the Dumfries and Galloway Hills.
We will definitely be back!! A huge thanks.

My partner and i were looking for a few days away just to relax, we definatly found it here! We loved that it was right on the coast and the little summer house was great to sit and have a few glasses of wine! The pub just a few doors away was very friendly too and the meals were superb! It was lovely to sit and talk to Susan and George as they cooked our breakfast which was delicious, they treat us as friends and made our stay very enjoyable, we will definatly be back to say hello to them again, and would recomend this b&b to anybody wanting a friendly few days away!!!
Thanks Susan and George, look forward to coming up to see you both again soon. :)

Booked as a walk in about 2pm before going off for a walk to John Paul Jones cottage. This is a small, really friendly isolated B&B off the beaten track but well worth tracking down. Susan and George are great fun to sit and talk to in the kitchen whilst a full Scottish breakfast is being cooked for you (just ask about the Jencks garden). If you want to know anything about the area, just ask. The rooms are not too elaborate and have a really homely feel to them so you are relaxed. recommended!

We had originally thought The Old shop would be a one-night stopover but we were so lucky to be able to extend our stay. Susan and George are so welcoming and helpful it was hard to leave. The remoteness was just what we wanted along the firth but with easy access to other small villages as well as Dumfries only 20 minutes away. There are some amazing walks and hikes nearby for the energenic. We even saw a porpoise feeding near the b/b. We are tempted to make a special trip back there soon.

Stayed for just one night with our friends as we were all attending a wedding where the Reception was being held just along the road at the Steamboat Inn.

I rang Susan (the owner) a couple of days before our arrival to ask if it would be possible to have the rooms available for 11am as we needed to get changed and travel to Castle Douglas for the wedding service. This was not a problem and both rooms were ready for us (thanks for that).

We had the upstairs room at the front of the house which had a fabulous sea view. Although quite small, the room was nicely decorated, clean and comfortable and with everything we needed for out stay. Pretty bed linen, comfy bed and en suite shower room.

We had breakfast in the family kitchen which we enjoyed as we got to chat to Susan and George whilst he cooked our food. Loved the fresh fruit salad and yogurt which was followed by a full Scottish breakfast cooked to perfection - one of the best I've had in any B & B.

Whilst we were having breakfast Susan gave us some information on the local area and wrote down some places of interest for us. We followed her advice and had wander round the shops in Castle Dougas which has lovely traditional high street, had lunch at the Balcary Bay Hotel (superb views from the conservatory) then did a coastal walk as the sun was shining by mid afternoon.

Would loved to have stayed longer at the Old Shop and will definately return if we are up in the area again.

A superb B & B situated right on the beach by the Solway Firth. We were greeted by Susan & George who are superb hosts. Very friendly and extremely obliging, giving us a lift to and from the Wedding we were attending. The Old Shop is a beautifully decorated old cottage and the rooms have every facility and are very clean. The en-suite was excellent, new and modern, even had under floor heating. The bed linen was beautiful and the bed comfortable. Breakfast, which is served in their dining kitchen was excellent with a full choice of fruit juices, fresh fruit, cereals and yoghurt together with the full Scottish Breakfast. The Summerhouse with decking at the end of the garden by the beach is a fantastic treat and gives great views over the Solway Firth. Excellent parking and the local pub which is 500yds away serves great food.
We would definitely stay at The Old Shop again. Excellent value for money.

Room Tip: Great sea view room at the front. There is also a lovely ground floor double room.
