We were travelling to Dumfries for a wedding and had initially booked to stay at the Aston Hotel but after reading reviews and talking to friends who live in Dumfries we decided to cancel and find another place to stay!

Oh boy are we so glad we did!

We were very warmly welcomed by Derek who helped us to our room with our luggage, and the current Mrs Watson never travels lightly even if it is just 2 nights!

The room is large and welcoming with traditional furniture and a large Kingsize bed (Room 1) it has a bay fronted window facing out on to Moffat Road which although can be busy you just don't notice any traffic noise due to the quality of both the Windows and the hearty drawstring curtains!

The bed is so comfortable you just don't want to get out of it in the morning! The bedding is very expensive Egyptian cotton that is crisp and luxurious, the kind of bedding you wish every hotel has!

The En-suite bathroom is the perfect size and very well appointed with a great shower and lovely fluffy white towels! The water gets very hot in the shower so be careful!

In the mornings we had a fantastic breakfast with tasty and local produce (Scotland has the best sausages) another poster commented on the Porridge about it being bland? Well it is Porridge but I always sprinkle Demerara sugar on then mix it and sprinkle white on top..... Hey presto lovely tasty porridge! The rest of the breakfast is what you choose the night before by filling in a menu card and leaving it at the reception before 9pm, no big issues and quite a good idea but this doesn't mean that Rena isn't flexible and will allow any changes!

Overall this is a lovely place to stay, Derek and Rena have a little Gem and anytime we will be returning to Dumfries Hamilton House will be our choice!

Things to do:
There is a restaurant just a few hundred meters from the Hotel called Bruno's, it is reportedly the best in Dumfries and we thought it was fantastic! But a word of caution.... Book it in advance! We manacled to get one of the last tables for Saturday night because Derek told us that you need to book on a weekend! Thanks for the advice Derek!

Dumfries has many attractions and local historic sites to visit most of which are free and the Robert Burns mausoleum is also in the town.

Bad points: None! Plain and simple we had no faults, the only thing I could think of is that it was very hot whilst we were in Dumfries ( we were surprised too) so access to an ice machine or a small fridge in room would be a bonus but its a personal thing and not a criticism!

Room Tip: Room 1 for couples!

Stayed here for the first time last weekend - having booked it after reading the reviews.
After making the booking.... a review appeared containing comments about restaurants in the area being full and giving the porridge a miss. Restaurants being full tends to indicate the food must be good - so that was a plus! Intrigued by the porridge comment - during my stay I conducted a taste test. The porridge looked like, smelled like and tasted like..... porridge. If you are not a fan of porridge - don't have it. If you like porridge - don't be put off by the comment in the review.
Breakfast is served in a very pleasant room which has a very pleasant view. The food is well cooked and attractively presented and I could not fault it in any way.
The rooms are clean and well appointed, the bed was huge and far too comfortable.
Rena and Derek are a lovely couple who look after their guests without smothering them with attention.
Car park at the rear is a bonus - eliminates driving around looking for a parking space in the street.
Everything was....just right! Good value for money and a thoroughly pleasant place to stay. It was my first visit - it will not be my last.

One of the most important things for a B&B (for me anyway!) is to have friendly and helpful owners - which Hamilton house has - the people who run it are lovely! The only thing that bothered me is that they recommended a restaurant within walking distance and when we got there they informed us they were fully booked - as were most of the restaurants in town (which were in the opposite direction to the recommended place) - it would have been helpful if we were warned of this and could have called round restaurants beforehand!

Breakfas was generally lovely - the only thing I wouldn't recommend is the porridge, it wasn't all that nice, but everything else was fab.

Overall its a lovely B&B and I would recommend staying here, comfortable clean rooms and parking round the back :)
