A fab guest house that catered for not only people, but dogs too. Needed a stop over on the way from the highlands to Wales and my patent found this place online.

Hosts were really friendly and welcoming, the room was clean and spacious with easy access outside to avoid traipsing through the rest of the house with a dog. We had a Rottweiler and I don't think she has been made to feel more welcome at someone else's house!

The view was amazing and I think there is a wee village nearby although we didn't have much time to go out and about. The guest house was a bit out of the way of the motorway which was the only downfall I guess. Still a great place to stay though, I'd highly recommend it.

Some friends and I stayed here in early May for a night, and it was an absolutely lovely experience. My partner, daughter and I had the family room, which has a large bedroom and also a separate sitting room, which is a great thing to have, I wish all places did the same as it makes life much easier. There was even a little box of toys, which my 5 year old loved. Decor was nice, bed was comfortable, and breakfast was delicious. I can't understand why this place isn't higher up the ratings, but for purely selfish reasons I also don't want it to be, so that it doesn't become so busy that we can't get a room next time! We went down the road to Sandyhills beach both days, which is a great little beach, and also had a terrific lunch in the tea room in New Abbey. A lovely part of the world, and a fab place to base yourself for exploring it.

Me and my partner stayed on Friday night.

The welcome was warm and genuine, the room very comfortable and the breakfast lovely.

If you are travelling the Solway coast, we can whole-heartedly recommend Alva as a place to lay your head !

When we arrived at Alva House we hadn't expected it to be so lovely. Very comfortable, clean, warm and beautiful room with splendid views over the Solway. Linda and John were very friendly, interesting and helpful with local knowledge. Lovely breakfasts, made even better by the stunning sight of thousands of Barnacle Geese flying into the near field in the morning. I'd recommend this as a top notch gem.

My husband and I stayed at Alva house for four nights, but really we could have stayed indefinitely. The hosts, Linda and John are the friendliest people you could hope to meet and the house itself is beautiful, as is the large garden. Our poodle Gabriel was treated as one of the family. There's wildlife galore; birds, squirrels, fishes and bats and fantastic countryside all around. We can't wait to return!

Room Tip: We had the downstairs double to be closest to the garden for our dog. It was perfect!

A lovely guesthouse in a stunning location, Linda and John couldn't have been more welcoming. The room was perfect- we have two lively toddlers and every last detail had been thought of. We had a large bedroom with comfortable beds and a separate lounge area next to the room complete with a box of toys to keep the boys entertained. The children were very happy with the animal biscuits that had been left for them. It look stunning on the website but is even better in reality. A delicious cooked breakfast in the morning set us up for the day too. We will definitely be going for longer next time!
