Description: Taste of Spice restaurant in Selkirk is a friendly, bubbling, award-winning Indian eaterie. Known to be Selkirks favourite Indian restaurant, Taste of Spice has been highly commended for its HealthyChoice menu offerings, so you can indulge your palate without overindulging. The smart, traditional interior has a casual atmosphere. Signature dishes include Saslik with a choice of chicken, lamb or quack (duck), Jalfrezi Balti, a combo of two great dishes, and Chicken Xacutti, a famous Goan dish unique to Taste of Spice. With five house wines available by the glass and Cobra on draft, this restaurant takes care of everything.

I was surprised to find such a good Indian in Selkirk the first time I went to Taste of Spice several years ago for lunch. We have returned several times since and have never found fault. The food and service can stand alongside the best in Dalkeith and Edinburgh.

You might think because it's in a small rural town you shouldn't expect too much but you'll be surprised. All the basics are good, the varieties of rice, side dishes and nan breads in particular deserve a special mention. Main dishes are generous and nicely presented, just avoid the king prawns which are like rubber bullets. Prices are reasonable and all in all, a night out here represents good value. Note the special offer on Thursday nights. It would be nice to see just a couple of traditional (made in-house) Indian desserts instead of those deep frozen ice creams. Look forward to trying again sometime.
