Tibbie Shiels Camping
Reviewed March 18, 2013

A group of us stayed here during a cold. crisp February half term for 2 nights B&B, having previously had to cancel in January because of snow. We were the only residents and were made to feel like visiting friends rather than customers. The cold was kept at bay with roaring fires, there was plenty of hot water and the breakfast was delicious. On the second night we had a meal cooked for us as a group which added to the family feel. Our double room was rather small but we did have the best view over the loch - the other rooms were much more spacious. Alistair also gave us good advice on local walks and we enjoyed stunning views around the loch, at the top of Grey Mare's Tail and on a walk up a newly planted valley. Tibbie Sheils wouldn't suit everyone. If you like the standard luxuries of modern hotel chains and lots of choice it's not for you. It's more like a very cosy and comfortable Youth Hostel in a magical setting - I guess more like the original Tibbie Shiels! We shall certainly return.

We have stayed at the tibbie shiels campsite a few times now - returning to savour the most amazing scenery and location, with our tent pitched directly at the loch side and a campfire burning - this place is truly a hidden gem !
However the natural assets of the site are sorely let down by the worst site facilities I've seen and poor site management. As other reviewers have mentioned the site manager has a knack for hacking people off with his rather offhand , sometimes rude, manner.
Having said all that , I know we'll be back to tibbie shiels campsite sometime this summer to soak up more of the atmosphere at this very special place.

had a good wee night here on saturday 5th jan even though the place was closed when we arrived,it had been that quiet the guy had sent the staff home, anyway he gave us the choice of a couple of pitches or park up in the carpark for free,it was just for one night so the carpark was the winner,he said he would open the pub up for a few hours at night and he could do food as well so that was me happy. The food was good, toilets clean and the owners were good company,we will return at some point during the summer.

My husband and I and my 2 year old little girl wanted to camp for 2 nights and bring in the new year in our vw campervan nestled in a stunning location and with Tibbie sheils campsite we got what we wished for and more.

We called last minute to see if Tibbie Shiels could fit us in and spoke to their friendly owner Alistair who couldnt be more helpful.

When we arrived, Alistair gave us a choice of 2 spots, one offering views of both lochs with snow capped mountains, stunning, what an amazing back drop. We unpacked and went into the cosy inn with friendly locals and warm wood burning stove. After a fantastic meal with a great kids menu also we got to know some of the other guests and chatted to the owners alistair, selina and their parents who explained the history of the place. We saw in the 'bells' with them all and it was great fun and everyone made us feel very welcome.

If you want a stunning location with a cosy inn within stumbling distance of your campsite serving tasty comfort pub food (my husband loved selina's homemade pate and the fish was gorgeous) with friendly owners and welcoming locals then you will love this hidden gem. I spent a whole day researching where my family should spend new year and im glad I picked tibbie shiels- this may end up being a new year tradition camping at tibbie shiels

My wife and I knew about the campsite but only came across it on a wandering drive. The site is level you can get pegs into the ground, it is clean and remarkably cheap.Very easy attitude about allowing dogs on site which is a big plus for us. The facilities are what I would describe as good basic. This is camping if you need anything else perhaps camping is not for you, The management style is also a plus with a minimum of sensible rules. This means no drunken hoolies, rammies or stramashes and a good nights sleep. The location is just lovely and a waterside pitch enhances the feeling . We will be back again with canoes . I would like to keep this site a secret but must highly recommend to people who do not need too much luxury.

We stayed here whilst walking the SUW and had had a long days walk in very wet conditions. The owners were very welcoming and immediately helped us dry our gear by providing drying facilities.
The room we had was quite spacious and well equipped and very clean.
The bar is rustic but the local ales were good and the people friendly.
The evening meal was served in the Bar area( not Dining room) which to be fair needs some updating. However the food was good and wholesome and met our needs. The owner let us use their phone to ring home as there is no mobile signal- at no cost.
In the morning we had breakfast in the dining room with stunning views and great food ( and dry clothes!) and we set off on our way refreshed.
The Inn needs some more updating but even so it is still a good place to stay for walkers.

A group of friends booked this campsite based on the Web Site, bad decision. We travel around the UK and Europe using touring motorcycles, the welcome we received was appalling. I was very close to turning round and leaving on the spot. We got a lecture for not going to reception (no signs) then another one about vehicles on the site, then another about drink. On paying in the Bar we were again told about the rules, i.e. no drinking on the site unless it is purchased from the bar! nothing about the facilities, drinking water or noise after 11.00 etc.

The location is truly beautiful, but this is to be my first and last stay. The toilets are terrible and the owner needs to re-think why he thinks he can run a camp-site open to the Public.
