We recently enjoyed a weekend break at the Philipburn Country House hotel, and had a thoroughly enjoyable stay. With a couple of reservations, we would certainly recommend it for location, comfort and friendly, helpful and caring staff and management. In particular, Sharon should be praised for her extremely pleasant manner, and her helpfulness in suggesting places to visit.

The Scottish Borders is a hidden gem, and this hotel is well situated for visiting it all, and only an hour from Edinburgh. The grounds, like the whole hotel, are nicely kept. A nice lounge area joins Reception, along with a comfortable bar and restaurant. Our superior room on the first floor was comfortable, with a mezzanine bedroom. While very pleasant, the two floors mean that the areas are rather small, but nice enough for a weekend break. Balconies on each level are very nice, and if the sun shone would be even better! Our only real criticism here is that the Leisure Break B&B rate is rather high for a Best Western Hotel, and certainly far more than we would expect to pay in most of the UK and Europe. If you can get a deal, with a decent discount, you are on to a winner.

The restaurant is comfortable, with the breakfasts freshly cooked, and very good indeed. Evening meals are OK, although we did decide to eat out on our second night there. The menu is rather wordy, and maybe simpler locally sourced fayre, at a slightly lower price, would enhance the experience. But again, Sharon was on hand to make for an enjoyable evening, and we would probably eat there again. The cooked breakfasts were lovely.

So, all in all a very pleasant stay. The comments we have made are an honest personal opinion, and in no way detract from our view that this is a very nice place to stay.

This hotel is a little gem. Attention to detail has really been at the forefront here. You can see that thought has been put into the rooms regarding where plugs need to be etc, its a real pain when you have to climb under things on the floor or move furniture to plug a hairdryer in!! The owners are very pleasant and welcoming and the food spot on, couldn't fault anything and will definately be coming here again when I am next up here on business.

We were so glad we chose this hotel for a short break in the Borders: the standards of accommodation, hospitality and service are exceptionally high and enabled us to have a really enjoyable stay. Our room (on two levels) was really very comfortable, it had a spacious bathroom and was well-equipped.

We enjoyed excellent food on both evenings when we dined in the hotel restaurant, and the friendliness and professionalism of the staff meant that each occasion was relaxing and memorable.

The location is ideal for exploring the Borders - Dawyck Botanic Garden and Bowhill were highlights for us.

Dear Strathallan, Thank you for your review. We are pleased to hear you had a comfortable stay with us and enjoyed the relaxed hospitality and excellent food. Selkirk is an ideal base for exploring the borders being central to many of the historic houses, attractions and gardens in the region particularly Bowhill Estate and Abbotsford House which are only 10 minutes drive from the hotel.

We needed somewhere which allowed pets for an overnight stay in the Borders on our way up to Scotland and again on the way back. This was a real find! It was really well positioned just out of Selkirk so quiet. We had a dog friendly lodge which was really comfortable and spacious and fully self catering, if required. We actually ate in the restaurant which was fantastic, the food was delicious. The breakfast next morning was excellent also and included in the price. The grounds weren't enclosed so our dog was required to be on a lead the whole time but this was only a minor inconvenience, however she was allowed in the bar which was a real bonus.

I love staying here when having to be at the borders for work. I have stayed here 4 times in the last 6 months and every time has been a above and beyond wonderful experience. I just wish that I was able to enjoy the facilities and comfy beds (Especially in room number 5!) a lot more as I am always having to check put early in order to go to my work appointments.
The staff here are so friendly and welcoming. They always make my stay here very pleasant. Nothing is ever a bother for them. Marie always has a lovely smile and chats away to you in such a genuine and endearing manner.

I have stayed in 3 different rooms. All of which have been very nice. The bathrooms are immaculate and living areas are very spacious.

I ventured down for breakfast for the first time during my last stay as my morning appointments allowed me a bit of spare time. I had the pleasure of meeting June who was so caring and attentive. Making sure I was well fed before my drive to Edinburgh.

Its now becoming a home from home as I feel warm and cosy and well looked after when working away on business.

I'll be back in July. Its so good to have a lovely place to stay which makes working on business feel like a pleasure stay.

Room Tip: Room 2 is a gorgeous "Princess" like suite with a walk way, double bathroom and huge four...

We have just returned from staying at the Philipburn Country House Hotel for a 3 nights. We found that the owners (Marie & Ian) and the staff to be most welcoming, gracious and hospitable. Our room was first class, and the food from both the bistro and fine dining menu to be of an excellent standard, and was reasonably priced. We had a split level room with views out to rear lawn and gardens. The room was to a high standard, modern decor, clean and great bath.

We would highly recommend the Philipburn as a base for anyone traveling around the Scottish Borders region.
