“Very Relaxing Stay”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 28, 2014

Have just returned from a two night stay at Peebles Hydro. The hotel was clean and very comfortable and the staff were friendly and helpful. The pool was very good and was well staffed. The breakfast was delicious, with lots of choice available, and set us up for a day exploring Peebles and the surrounding area.

Just returned after a relaxing overnight stay at the Hydro, if you can try and get a feature room we were in room 60 which was spacious and had amazing views well worth the upgrade cost
Very friendly staff. No hotel information given at reception on check in, or any details in the room. ie - meal times , checkout times. Breakfast was varied and plentiful a good start to the day. We will definitely stay again when in the area.

Room Tip: Feature rooms have amazing views

Many of the benefits of a once grand hotel remain here to be enjoyed by visitors of all ages at extremely competitive rates. Spending two days in the Hydro using Itison vouchers we did not expect, nor got the best room in the hotel. Our room was well equipped though - lacking only a view but the views from the shared public rooms are glorious. These main rooms ooze the luxurious grace of this hotel’s opulent past.
The huge gardens have been laid out and manicured by teams of gardeners at one time. It would be costly to maintain them at that level but they are cared for, retaining much of their beauty. Facilities such as tennis courts, mini golf course and a putting green are still maintained to a playable level. These have been added to with a kiddies’ playground and an assault course for older children. Indoor activities include table tennis, badminton, snooker and, reflecting the hotel’s origins as a spa, they retain treatment rooms, a sauna and a good sized pool. All these facilities are available free to all the guests whilst a genuine effort is being made to develop as a family hotel by providing organized activities for children with daily programmes that even involve the kids dining together. These day courses, involving art and entertainments as well as sports, are run most days of the week and are free – freeing up time for hattered parents!
The centre of Peebles is a short walk away and, with so many recommended eating places, we took our evening meals there. Breakfasts at the Hydro are mainly on a help yourself basis that suits gluttons, anorexics and the rest of us. There is a good choice of cereals, fruit juices and pastries. The fruit table is the best we have seen in any hotel with a large selection of both fresh and preserved fruits. Hotplates in the centre of the room have all the traditional breakfast items which are replenished fairly frequently. Items that do not stand well, such as poached eggs, smoked haddock, kippers and porridge are ordered from the waiter along with your tea, coffee and toast. Everything we had was of good quality and well cooked.
Many thanks to the staff whom we found friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: Avoid 101 if you can.

This is the welcome awaiting you at Peebles hydro ! Not a sorry or even a place to put your luggage just come back later but can't tell you how much later ! Lovely view of a roof and enamel peeling off dirty bath . Eventually at 15.30 we were given key to our room still no sorry ! On checking out reception then attempted to charge us for someone else's bar bill which I refused to pay ! Still not been asked if we enjoyed our stay maybe just as well !

What an awful review mccaffertys. We are really sorry to read about the way you feel about your recent visit, as we aim to provide great service and facilities to all of our guests. Our customer service was unacceptable. Peebles hydro is now under new ownership and over the next few months we will be making improvements, top of the list will be customer service.

The booking process was a shambles blamed on the recent take over of the hotel (good luck new owners!) which was not a great start.

Food is very good for quality and quantity

We were a group of 20 cyclists staying for the forth consecutive year (and last) and when we asked if there was a TV room so we could watch the European Final we were told no, but your room has a TV or you could walk into town to watch it. Very helpful, thank you.

They closed the main bar at 21h00 on SATURDAY NIGHT!!!! and we had to go to the ballroom where there was a function (private we think) on to buy drinks and sit in the lobby area - what a stupid and/or strange decision that was. Still, it probably saved the salary of a barman for two hours but inconvenienced 20 of us plus others.

I have never stayed in a hotel where breakfast starts so late (07h45 and 08h30 on Sunday) and where the lobby area is cleaned so late (07h30) which means that congregating for a pre breakfast chat is a bit tricky.

I must say that always, always, the staff are helpful and friendly but it seems that there is no managerial direction. Everyone is doing their best but without much co-ordination.

The hotel (and rooms) are redolent of faded grandeur (although most rooms do not have a good view at all - or have I just been unlucky four times?), and it will take a lot of very heavy investment to bring the hotel up to scratch.

Oh well.

Room Tip: Insist on a front facing room.

This was our first visit to the hydro and I was a bit apprehensive following reviews on here. In my opinion, people are a bit harsh with some of the comments. We arrived at reception and were dealt with promptly by Kirsten who advised of meal times and directions to room, facilities etc. Room number 64 was allocated and it was large, spotlessly clean, plenty of tea/coffee, shampoo etc with a flat screen TV and free wifi. The room decor was a bit dated but we had a lovely view looking into some gardens with baby rabbits, it was very quiet and peaceful corridors were all hoovered and clean bearing in mind hotel was full due to bank holiday.

We did not use the pool on this occasion but it looks great, quite a big pool compared to other hotels we have stayed in. I spoke with a lovely barman (quite a new member of staff), who despite finishing his shift, gave me a history of the hotel which I love, and genuinely appeared to be interested in my feedback following my visit, staff are one of the most valuable assets a hotel has and this young fellow was very informative on places to see and things to do also 10/10 for him!

We ate out in Peebles so cannot comment on the restaurant, however we did have breakfast which was buffet style with plenty of choice, fruit, cereal and the usual fry, you can order kippers, porridge etc if you wish.

This is a good place for families as plenty to do with young children, play park, pitch and putt, giant chequers and indoor activities too, also activities for teenagers too! There was a coach party in when we visited but this did not detract from the ambience as Willie who was serving the teas kept everyone happy with his cheerful nature and general camaraderie with guests young and old alike.

All in all this was a good first time visit for us and we will certainly be back in the future to see what other changes are afoot under the new ownership and also to sit in conservatory and enjoy the lovely views!

Thank you so much for your feedback Laineyloulou. Our staff work really hard and it is such a boost to hear your positive comments. The Hydro has an amazing history which is quite fascinating and under our new ownership we look forward to an exciting future. We had a disappointing and uncomfortable 2 days' stay at this doubtlessly once grand but now faded and shabby Hydro. Our room (charged at £133 per night) was basic and far from what we would expect of a 4 star hotel. On both days we found the room uncomfortably chilly in the late afternoons and were astonished to discover, despite complaining twice to reception, that we could not control the heating ourselves but had to sit with our outdoor jackets on until the hotel deigned to switch on the heating centrally around 6pm. The reception staff were positively uncaring and dismissive.
Clearly there are plans to upgrade this hotel but that is little comfort to paying guests who are presently paying handsomely for substandard accommodation. The final insult was the fact we were overcharged by some £85 which was eventually refunded with no hint of an apology. We will not be back.
