Using an Itison voucher for a 2 night B&B stay we were delighted to have stayed in such a grand place. Yes as others have pointed out, it's looking rather tired ( would have loved to have seen it in its 'hey day') but it remains very clean.
When we checked in the receptionist was vey friendly and took time to explain where everything was, times for breakfast and if we wanted to dine in the hotel that evening. Cost for dinner was £25 per person, we decided not to as we were keen to eat in the town.
Our bedroom on 2nd floor was very large with a separate dressing room with wardrobes. Bathroom tired looking but clean, plenty of hot water and fluffy towels. There was no notice in the bedroom re the changing of towels but we just put them in the bath when finished and retired to find a fresh set in bathroom.
1 point worth mentioning is that there was a socket for hair dryer straighteners etc right next to the mirror which is rarely seen in other places we have stayed, and makes the drying of hair so much easier! There was a hotel hair dryer in the top drawer of the table but I prefer to take my own.
The Bar doesn't open until 6pm however should you wish a wee drink before then, just order at reception and they will bring it to the seating area.
The hotel is only a 5-10 min stroll into town. They have extensive grounds which are nice to walk around.
The breakfast was top notch. Huge selection.
All staff we met or bumped into were always friendly and keen to help.
If we were ever in the area again, I would have no hesitation with booking to stay here again.

We have just spent a lovely Easter break at the Peebles Hydro, four adults and my two grandaughters aged 3 & 5.

There was a hiccup with one of the bedrooms which was soon sorted and there must have been a staff shortage in the coffee lounge when we asked for a sandwich & coffee it took 40 minutes,

The bedrooms were clean and comfortable, the bathroom was a little tired, but plenty of hot water & big fluffy white towels and dressing gowns which was useful to go down to the swimming pool. There was a large flat screen TVin our room no idea of the reception because we didn't turn it on but we had a good connection on our Ipad

The kids club was good, we only used it in the evening with the girls eating first, there was a good choice of food, one evening they fancied sausages which weren't on the menu but the chef heard them and cooked some just for the girls. Then the huge bonus for us was the kids club in the evening, which they really enjoyed and so did we because it gave us the chance to eat our evening meal in peace!!!!

There was a ceilidh band on two of the evening, they were really good, we all had a couple of dances but as we were tired so we couldn't make the most of a late night parting.

The food was amazing, I think the hotel has hoovered up all the best looking and polite local young people, it was a pleasure to be served by them. The senior staff were the same they couldn't do enough for you. On Easter Sunday there was a chocolate egg on our plates and in the evening the tables were decorated with helium balloons

We met people that having been using the hotel for years and we most certainly will be going back. The hotel is old and full of charm I hope they keep it like that, if we wanted a modern hotel we would go to the likes of an Express Inn

Stayed Easter Sunday, had not booked ahead but rooms available, stayed in room 31 which had everything we needed, clean & comfortable & a good size. Staff were charming, made to feel like a valued guest by every one of them. Breakfast buffet was excellent with all choices catered for, tea, coffee & toast served with a smile, also specials to order, I had the smoked haddock & poached egg & it was delicious. Loved Peebles & will return soon, would always choose to stay at the Hydro, next time we will take swimwear & try out the leisure facilities, all in all great value for money, highly recommended.

Have visited Peebles Hydro yearly and sometimes twice a year as we love the old fashioned service of a Grand Old Hotel along with the child-friendly facilities - suits our party of 9yrs to 91 year old. Wondered, having read about the Crieff Hydro taking over, how that would affect things - and unfortunately the first thing was being told that the Kids Club would only allow a 2hr slot a day and we would have to choose which time. We went for the evening slot as another attraction for us is the ability to enjoy our evening meal in peace while our daughter enjoys the Kids Club. Felt an immediate disappointment firstly at the change, and also that we didn't know ahead of time. It wasn't a big deal for us, as in previous years we tended to go out during the day with the promise of returning in time for kids play time in the pool - so there wasn't that time constraint on us, however I know a single father of 2 girls thought he was going to have some peace during the day and so that didn't go to plan. There was a change to the rules by our fourth day that allowed more than one slot and I don't know why that came about - but it was too late in our holiday to make a difference. We enjoyed the Kids early tea - this time as the hotel wasn't busy and very few kids in the hotel, the tea was served in the conservatory - which was nice and good choice of meals. Generally it is a buffet style in Lazels restaurant. Suited us fine.
Generally we enjoyed our stay - we enjoy the old fashioned values of staff remembering you and the silver-service in the restaurant. All staff we met were very, very nice, friendly and helpful and that really matters. Most staff seemed enthusiastic about the new management and the hope of money being spent on the hotel as it is looking tired in a lot of places. Possibly due to staff being sent to Crieff for training etc there were less staff around in certain areas but that didn't affect us too much. I do like to read about the hotel facilities in the usual guide you find in the bedroom, even if I've been before, however they had disappeared and there was also a lack of written info about time of breakfast, dinner, check out times etc and you had to ask. I did hear that they were trying to cut down on paper and maybe with the transition to new owners the room guide was removed as it wasn't up-to date however I think people do like to have that info to hand.
Food was very nice - great breakfast and lovely dinners. NIce room at the front - which had it's own sitting room and worth paying extra for that space. Yes it needs an upgrade but please don't make it too modern - we would choose a modern hotel if we wanted that. By all means refurbish the bathrooms and maybe some of the bedroom furniture that creaks, the kids playroom too - but retain the Hydro feel and all the regulars will return and recommend it to all their friends. Good luck to the staff who have to administer the changes - they are valuable to you. Unlike some other reviews, I have never had anything but excellent service from reception from the moment we arrived. The staff are gems.

Room Tip: Rooms on front of hotel have great views - and pay extra if you want a suite with separate sitting r...

Booked a family room for the three of us (myself and the wife and 16 year old daughter who has learning disabilities) . When we arrived we were told it was just a double we booked ,showed her the confirmation ,room not ready . We came back to be told they have put a single in with the double . The room was horrible this was a shock thought I was coming to a high class hotel ,I would class this as a two star . I complained and was giving a family room that I had booked in the first place . The only good thing about this hotel is the food , I would not say it was the best food I have tasted but it was ok . This hotel should get down graded to a 3 star at the most and the staff should be taught to remember the paying guests are important .

The Hydro has new owners and we hope they'll retain the old-fashioned friendly service that we've come to appreciate over the years. True - there needs to be some upgrading, but please please keep the essence of what is a comfy Grand Old Hotel. Agree that silver service is old fashioned compared to today's style of fancy plated-up food, but that is what makes the Hydro unique - the staff engage with the guests, adding a personal touch. All the reception staff - especially Helen - went out of their way to make sure our needs were met. We were allocated lovely room at the front which was adapted for disabled guests, with fabulous wet room and sumptuous bed. The only niggle was that daily servicing of the room was slow - still not done after lunch, so we had to ask so that my husband could have a nap.
Food was really good, piping hot breakfast buffet and gluten free options were much appreciated. It will be interesting to see what improvements the new owners make when we return in October. A very family friendly hotel, so it might not appeal to anyone looking for a sophisticated experience, but for people like us - it is just great.

Room Tip: First floor rooms are best for spaciousness and views.

The Peebles Hydro is well located close to the town of Peebles surrounded by pleasant, if neglected, large grounds. After parking their car and entering the hotel, the guest is met by an impressively steep flight of stairs before reaching the front desk, where staff seem more preoccupied with their own conversations than with greeting arriving guests. Check in was brief and unhelpful, even after enquiring whether we had visited the hotel previously. Our bedroom was large and sparsely furnished and located at the end of a long cavernous corridor. In fact, the whole of the hotel was similar. The restaurant at the other end of the same corridor had a large barn-like feeling. The food was good and ample, even if the menu was uninspiring. The 'silver service' type of serving - I have not experienced in good hotels since the 1980s. The staff seem hardworking but disorganised in serving guests, and lacking in direction from more experienced staff. This hotel is badly in need of a major refurbishment, and staff require effective hospitality training.
