“Excellent food and accommodation”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 25, 2013

We stayed for two nights at Cringletie House, primarily to enjoy the Sunday evening Tasting Menu, but also to have a short break in the countryside. We arrived on the Saturday afternoon and were greeted warmly and professionally. We had a standard room on the ground floor with views across the rear gardens. The room was equipped with all those little extra touches you find on Executive/Club floors in the hotel chains or in 5* hotels. The bar was comfortable - and given the external temperature - very warm and cosy. There was also a pleasant lounge upstairs as well as the Library.

It was recommended to be in the bar half and hour before dinner; this allowed time for an aperitif, the very pleasant canapes to be served and an order placed for the Temptation Menu. The wine was good value and drinks in the bar very reasonable. Dinner was superb, with first class service and a very pleasant atmosphere.

Breakfast on Sunday (and Monday) was also of good quality, and again good to escape from the buffet breakfast concept. As with all of the food it was aimed at those who value taste and presentation over sheer quantity. After spending the morning and middle part of the day getting progressively chilled by the bitter wind and frequent snow showers, we returned the warmth and comfort of Cringletie to spend the rest of the afternoon reading and sipping drinks. It was such a relaxing place to be.

The Tasting Menu, with accompanying wines, was a fine and most enjoyable event. Again, service was very good - professional but warm and friendly. The food was outstanding, we have enjoyed tasting menus in Michelin starred restaurants in Belgium, Quebec and France - this was the equal of any of them in presentation, blend of tastes and sheer skill. In addition, the choice of wines was very good, and we enjoyed the knowledge of the staff in explaining the wines and their provenance.

Altogether an excellent experience which we will repeat later in the year.

My husband and I stayed overnight with a living social voucher deal. The hotel and its staff were excellent, from the man on reception to the bar and waiting staff, all extremely polite and friendly. The food for dinner and then breakfast was faultless. Would thoroughly recommend this hotel.

We booked for lunch & as we planned to spend the day in the area we booked a room for a one night stay. Every member of staff we encountered was so professional & friendly. They are an asset to the hotel. Lunch was enjoyable but not outstanding - a more modern upmarket take on a traditional Sunday lunch. The restaurant was busy but not full.

As someone else suggested on this site, you may want to check the website & book a specific room. We had booked a luxury room & I was disappointed to discover it was an attic room in the eaves. The room was quiet & cosy but I just have a strong dislike of attic rooms with coombed ceilings. The mattress on my side of the bed had a deep sag so not good if you have a bad back. A great selection of Molton brown products in the bathroom - I think we had about 7 full sized bottles to choose from. It was very cold outside but room was delightfully toastie.

Overall we had a nice stay, largely due to the lovely young international staff who went out of their way to ensure all guests were well looked after.

We (a family of 5 adults + chihuahua) booked Cringletie as special treat for a special birthday and it was simply outstanding.

The house itself is old and beautiful, full of charm and character. It sits within well maintained grounds including a lovely forest area - ideal for a quick stroll before breakfast or for sitting by an open fire, with a hot toddy and gazing out upon.

The bedrooms where luxurious, comfortable and spotlessly clean. We had three rooms in total, all different but all beautifully styled. They all had the most modern of facilities whilst retaining the old house charm. I must pay special mention that we also had a dog with us. Normally at hotels, the rooms that dogs our alllowed to stay in our normally a little tired and little bit worn, but not at Cringletie. The room was just as luxurious and beautiful as the others. Our little pooch was definitely in his element and was made very welcome throughout our stay.

During our stay, we had quite a few meals at Cringletie. Every meal, whether it be breakfast, afternoon tea or evening dinner was exceptional. The chef is obviously very passionate about his cooking and created an experience every time we ate. Everything was so fresh and delicious. It was elegant without being pretentious and just felt like a real treat. We ate in dining room on most occasions which is opulent in itself. Even though you will be a resident, make sure to reserve a table at the restaurant at the time of booking. It can get busy with non-resident bookings as well (always a good sign)!

What makes Cringletie so fabulous, has to be Vivienne and the rest of the staff at Cringletie. From the initial enquiry until our departure, the service was certainly first class. They were very attentive without being intrusive and certainly did everything they could to make sure you had a lovely time. What we felt was that everyone we met had so much pride for the house, but in the nicest of ways.

If you do venture out the house, Peebles is a short drive away where you will find a few other nice restaurants and gift shops to keep you occupied. Also, Edinburgh was only about 40mins drive away if you want to experience the quickerpace of life of this vibrant city, but coming back to Cringletie, is always a delight.

Woudl highly recommend Cringltie. Just hoping we don;t have to wait for another special occasion to go back.

We love Edinburgh, but wanted to stay somewhere a bit different. We stumbled on Cringletie House and I'm glad we did. Lovely, welcoming staff and a beautifully appointed hotel. What really sets this hotel apart though is the quality of the food which is outstanding. Delicious breakfasts that set you up for the day and sumptuous evening meals. The perfect place if u want a quiet few days of eating and fine wine.

We opted for the Grand Experience tasting menu and a grand experience it was. This is a menu for people who like their food and I can thoroughly recommend the wine option that goes with it. Some may consider the price high and the service over the top, but you'll pay more and get less attentive service in most restaurants of a similar standard in Edinburgh and/or Glasgow. We found it to be absolutely fantastic with every course and associated wine choice being explained in detail - I have no doubt, exactly as the chef intended it to be. Every single one of the seven courses was cooked and presented perfectly. We enjoyed coffee and petit fours in the comfort of the library, which rounded off the evening very nicely. I can't recommend this place highly enough.

We were driving around the area and on a Friday night they found rooms for weary travellers. We stayed with my parents who are in there 80's and enjoyed a most enjoyable meal and found the rooms very comfortable. The House sits in a beautiful location and the staff were incredibly helpful. It is a place I would love to revisit and explore the area more extensively.

Room Tip: The higher floors are not suitable of persons with mobility issues. My parents were not comfortable...
