Had a good 4 days, great location and extremely friendly and efficient staff. Room 20 still to be refurbished but still comfortable and quiet. Good food. Music on Friday night and great spring weather laid on too.

Room Tip: Ask for one of refurbished rooms, most done but some still to do.

I stayed here with a colleague this weekend, we were up for a charity bike ride. Whilst the staff were very nice and accommodating (helpfully providing secure bike storage etc.) for the price we paid the facilities were very shabby. I stayed in room 4 which is in need of refurbishment. I note an earlier review complained about the mattress and the dripping tap, which I too suffered from - opting to spread towels on the mattress to make it more comfortable.
Breakfasts seemed to be very disorganised - starts at 7.30 but nothing hot until 8!! Which was an inconvenience for those of us up early for an event (us and bunch of Rally drivers). I am sure the new owners will sort all this as it's a lovely building in a perfect location - just needs a full refurb!
We paid £130 each for two nights - this really is a sub £50 a night hotel.

Room Tip: Apparently there are refurbished rooms, insist on these

Room 4 is on the list for referb and breakfast at the weekend does not start till 8 on sat sun and my waiter got up as you said you wanted a cold breakfast he told you a hot one would be 8 on sat/sun we have now put a breakfast time list in reseption and room 4,5 are next on referb list as for the price think you have got that wrong double or twin rooms are £80 per room per night B/B single 50 a late arrivel is twin £65 per room per night so 2 nights would be £130 for 1 room for 2 people B/B AND ON CHEEKING THE SHEET THATS WHAT YOU PAID .

We stayed for one night in May in a recently renovated room. The room was clean and looked fresh with new paint, but the toilet bowl was old and cracked and the toilet didn't flush properly. All the fixtures and fittings were old as we're the carpets. There was no hair dryer in the room. The new owners have a huge task to bring the hotel up to standard and it will take some time.

The room was cold when we arrived and it was a cold day. It would have been more welcoming to arrive to a warm room on a cold day. The heater did work well and warmed the room up but should have been on in advance.

Breakfast was just alright.

The hotel is in a great location in the heart of Melrose with good parking. The owners were friendly and are keen to improve the hotel but at present we thought it expensive for the facilities.

Myself and a group of friends stayed at the G & A for a night during our St Cuthberts way walk. Rooms were large , comfortable and clean. Bath wth good shower. Staff were very helpfull and friendly. I was particulary greatful as i had forgotten some items in my room and the staff very kindly offerred to post them on to me. This was very much appreciated, and gives a good example of the kind of service you don't always get these days. Thanks again.

We had used the George and Abbotsford before but only for the reastaurant which was excellent. then. But the place has changed hands about six months ago and new brooms came in to change things for the better! This is still an ongoing thing and is quite a huge task as most of the rooms need to be renovated. Well on arrival I didn't recognize the foyer -what a change - but we had a very warm welcome from the new owner. Because of age and infirmity we had a room (No 4) on the first floor as yet unrestored. All in ll it was a big disappointment. The springs of the mattress were poking up - it should have been changed years ago - and as hard as a rock. However having said that we had a good night's sleep and the bedding etc was certainly clean.
The bathroom was the next disappointment; a dripping hot tap, the cold water tap gave out tepid water and had to run for better than ten minutes before it ran cold. (Probably due to antiquated plumbing arrangements) but whilst the water pressure was powerful enough running into the bath it was unable to work the shower effectively and the dribble that came out was scalding water.
These matters I made the owners aware of but I can sympathise with the magnitude of their task.
But all in all this work should have been done before the hotel was opened for staying guests because anyone staying in an unrestored room is certainly not getting value for the current room rates. After all of that if you would like a good meal well presented, good beers and a good breakfast I would recommend this hotel to anyone but I would negotiaste a lesser room rate if you are offered an unrefurbished room.

Room Tip: Make sure you get a refurbished room!

sorry you was not happy with the room please note that the hotel is 300 years old and we have only been here 6 months we have 30 beds and we can not afford to close the doors to upgrade as we would not be practical .the plumming is old but works well if you was to redo all the pipes you would not have any old builing left and it works well and if you run the cold tap it comes cold the shower as now been replaced but we was doing all the rooms as we redecorate and this room is not done . we are a family run hotel and we try to please we are not a big chain hotel we are a 2 star only at the moment we know we have a long we to go but we will get there andria

Stopped at the George and Abbotsford on Friday for their curry night. It was very tasty and good value for money. In the bar they had live music on which was very easy on the old ears the place seemed to be busy enough and the staff were all helpful and polite .Would recommend and return in the future .
