“Recuperate after onslaught of lovely woollens”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 19, 2014

The shop is amazing, so - sensing reeling - my friends and I sat down to tea and a nibble. It's a shop restaurant, with a difference. Something about the atmosphere stays with you after you go.

“Chill Out”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 16, 2014

Johnstons is a welcome addition to the cafe scene in a town where it is often difficult [ and not so long ago impossible] to get a good cup of coffee in pleasant surroundings. The elegant shop which you first pass through is always enjoyable to browse in, even if you can't afford any of the beautiful things on display. The cafe itself is light and airy, L-shaped with plenty of comfortable seating and pleasant views of the river and riverside walk, adjoining footbridge and Hawick beyond. Parking is available to front and rear. In several visits I have always found both food and service very good, with staff friendly and attentive. Prices are reasonable and that includes the beer or wine you may choose to have with your lunch. Usually there's a good buzz to the place. Two complaints -a ] in summer the place suffers from too much air-con, and on hot days you have to take in a jacket to sit comfortably in the sometimes polar blast.; b ]nothing cooked is available after three in the afternoon, this latter being a strange custom prevalent in the town, forcing visitors either to make do with cakes and scones, go to one of the dismal supermarket cafes, or head elsewhere.

“Good food, service and atmosphere poor”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 5, 2014

We are frequent visitors to the coffee shop for coffees and lunch. As always the food was good, however I was not happy to see young staff treating a mature member of staff with disdain and mocking behaviour. This is unacceptable in any situation and I did mention it to the manager of the shop. The person who was being mistreated could teach both of these young people a huge amount about good customer service. Seriously, not impressed!!

“Superb Food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 3, 2013

A limited menu, considering they advertise lunch. None the less, the food is excellent and the standards match their main products of high quality textiles.

“Probably the best lunch place in town”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 11, 2013

We were passing through Hawick on our way back to Yorkshire from Dunblane. We had been looking for a likely looking 'pit stop' for some time but nothing had looked inviting.
A quick drive around Hawick didn't look promising but a tourist sign pointed out a cashmere mill with a visitor centre.
We followed the signs and arrived at Johnstons of Elgin. The mill complex has a coffee shop and wow what a success.
We were shown to our table by a charming and friendly lady. Unluckily I had arrived too late for the great sounding sausage breakfast sandwich !
We shared a chicken and cranberry club sandwich. Glad we shared, it was huge, beautifully served with salad and potato crisps.Taylors of Harrogate Yorkshire tea washed it down.
The coffee shop is well appointed, the staff are friendly and professional, the menu is extensive
both for full lunches and for snacks, it is also licensed.
