Owner description: Soak up the eerie, powerful atmosphere of an imposing stronghold with a notorious reputation. One of the great Borders castles, Hermitage dates back to the 1300s. Look for the garrison's cesspit and seek shelter under the great arch if it rains.

Bit of the beaten track, but well worth the visit
(if coming from Hawick would recommend using the B6399 for both trips)
Very imposing castle due to the fact that outside walls are virtually intact.
The person working at the castle had a good knowledge of it.
Interpretation boards - could do with some extra boards and bit more on what was restored in 1830.

There is a free car park at the site

I'd never heard of this castle until it was recommended by the staff at Smailholme Tower. Although it was nearly an hour out of our way I am so glad we came here! The location is incredibly desolate and the road was very .... interesting. There is a small parking area near the castle and the person in the ticket office (17th Sept lunchtime) was absolutely brilliant - knowledgeable and helpful.
The castle is deceptively large, without a person in the picture it is very difficult to get a sense of scale. The exterior walls are all intact and we did a circuit before heading inside. There are various information boards dotted around giving the history of the castle and the local reivers. There isn't a huge amount to see inside but you can get an idea of the scale and grandeur of the place. it's worth taking the short walk to the chapel too for a different viewpoint.

There isn't much in the way of facilities, toilet and tiny shop but the castle itself makes up for that. it would be nice to have a little more access to areas inside but its really the brooding exterior that catches the imagination.
Don't forget to visit the chapel remains too.

We chose probably the wrong day but as it was wet, we went. An impressive castle and would have been better on a dry day. Popular despite the relatively remoteness.

This ruin is a somewhat out of the way in a vary open/moors location. The structure is quite impressive and in great condition for a ruin. Take a picnic/lunch if you go as there is nothing nearby.
