Owner description: Soak up the eerie, powerful atmosphere of an imposing stronghold with a notorious reputation. One of the great Borders castles, Hermitage dates back to the 1300s. Look for the garrison's cesspit and seek shelter under the great arch if it rains.

Spectacular stronghold in the middle of nowhere. Beautiful situation with gorgeous stream nearby. First went with my sadly deceased Dad and my daughter for a picnic in May. We all loved it hugely and have been back since. Quite the most unique castle I have ever seen.

We visited mid-week and were surprised to see so many visitors having read it was so isolated. The castle sits on a mound overlooking the Liddesdale Valley. A scenic narrow 7 mile road from highway A7 leads to the castle. Guide was friendly, toilet facilities available which was good if you find yourself caught short!. There are also foundations of a 12th century chapel to visit where Queen Mary would have worshipped when she was resident at the castle, Many local legends tell of the castle's bloody history. A very interesting and calm and relaxing place to visit on a sunny day and I believe it would be quite foreboding on a dark wet day!.

I had expected Hermitage to be big and imposing, but when you drive round the corner and there it is, it really blew me out the water. The size and solidarity of it amoungst stunning scenery is WOW.

The steward who was a university student was so interesting to talk to. He had wrote a paper on the local history including the lowland clearances. Such enthusiasm from someone so young, just what Historic Scotland needs.

The castle is a bit off the beaten track but once you spot the imposing castle it's worth the journey set in stunning countryside. Well described through information boards it's easy to see how important this site used to be. Apparently Sir Walter Scott's favourite castle. Interesting tales of wizardry and battles through time.
Possibly not for those who don't have the imagination to picture the shell in times gone by.
Edinburgh Castle it isn't but the seclusion adds to the mystery.

Beautiful castle. Bring your trainers and hiking boots for the steps. MQS visited hubby Bothwell here. Nice heather and sheep in the meadows. Chapel is in ruins.
