Barcaldine Cottage is a small semi-detached bungalow amongst a group of 5 tucked away behind once what might have been an old hotel/restaurant. It is at the end of a private driveway just off the Soroba Road that runs south of the town of Oban. The cottage is about 1 mile from the centre of the town and even closer to 3 supermarkets and a free car park for easy access to the harbour and ferry terminal. For us it was on the right side of town. Although lacking in scenic views the cottage is a very quiet location and is spotlessly clean and tidy. For the first 2 days of our stay it was cool and wet but the electric heaters were extremely efficient in warming the place up. Thereafter it was blue skies and the place was wonderful. We would have liked some blinds in the lounge/diner and kitchen to offer and bit more privacy and some of the kitchen utensils could do with a refresh, but these were minor gripes. Recommended walk - take the foot ferry to the local island of Kerrara and aound its southern loop stopping at the cottage for lunch. Local attraction - the Sealife Adventure wildlife cruises from Clachan-Seil, Southwest Of Oban, Isle Of Seil - about 10 miles south. Another 10 miles on and there is Arduaine Garden (NT) and the adjoining Melfort Hotel for lunch on the terrace overlooking the loch. For foodies there is the Inverawe Smokehouse to the north - fresh smoked salmon, trout etc to taste and takeaway. A trip to Mull of course is a must although it was very busy. One of our two planned trips was cancelled due to the ship's radar not working! All-in-all, great break and would reccommend Barcaldine Cottage as a base.
Very comfortable and clean cottage, easy walking distance to the town, Caroline seems to have thought of everything to make our stay enjoyable
Balcaldine Cottage was perfect for our two night stay prior to catching the ferry to the Outer Hebrides. The cottage is very comfortable and well equipped, with a full size fridge and freezer:just what we needed for stocking up from the large Tesco in Oban before self catering on the Island of Barra. The cottage is in a very quiet cul de sac about one mile from Oban town centre.
Lovely clean cottage in peaceful area with everything you need.
Lovely welcome hamper made us feel welcome and special. Thanks for va lovely relaxing stay.
It was nice to find a welcome pack and everything we needed for a short stay. Delighted with the cottage and all its facilities.
Great cottage! The food around Oban is delicious. The sealife centre is only a few miles away and is great!
