Corriemar Guest House
Ranked #56 of 94 Oban B&B and Inns
Reviewed November 4, 2013

We arrived in Oban on the evening of 14th October 2013 the first night of our honeymoon and drove along the esplanade looking for a place to stay. When we tried the Corriemar the owner showed us a couple of rooms on the top floor which were both delightful and unique. The smaller of the two rooms contained a four poster bed and the larger room was furnished with a large bed and a chaise-long and had a bay window with super views overlooking Oban Bay and the Island of Kerrera.

The house is full of charming knick-knacks and antiques and the owners were very friendly. The bed was very comfortable and we had a fantastic breakfast. This is a first class guest house in a stunning location.

Room Tip: The rooms overlooking the sea are worth it for the fantastic views.

We stayed for two nights at the end of August with friends. The location is ideal with a flat and pleasant walk round the bay into town. We had asked for sea view rooms and the views did not disappoint. We had a four poster bed in our room with a view of the bay from the bed. The sitting room similarly had great views. I take the point made by other reviewers that there are lots of knick knacks on display. Personally I found this charming as it reminded me of how my mother decorated our home. The house was clean and the dining room had a nice atmosphere. There was plenty of fruit at breakfast, but the sausages were not to my taste and the poached eggs on top of the potato scone made it soggy. The house lacked some touches that have given other b and bs an edge e.g. toiletries in the shower room were ordinary, the coffee served at breakfast was instant and the fruit juice was a bit strange.

Corriemar is a nice guest house with a good and varied breakfast in a great location. The only negative thing I would say is that the matress in the room was probably old as you could feel the springs in it. A new matress would make for a better night's sleep.

A beautiful house, impeccably decorated, with polite and personable owner. After a string of grumpy owners at other guest houses, or shabby rooms, this was a delight. Well worth the money. A wee but of a walk from the heart of downtown but the harbour views are stunning.

Paid £50 per person per night (3 people). The most expensive guest house/b&b I have ever paid. I booked room 7 (sea view) and the landlady changed it to room 8 (no view). We stayed with another couple....their room got changed too (and she WANTED to charge them more too than the original price agreed). Room was clean but dated. Old fashioned decor and features, but nice. Bed was very comfy. Breakfast was all you can eat served by foreigners who spoke very little English (not that it caused any problems). When paying for our stay the landlady asked for £310 instead of £300. I corrected her.

Room Tip: You made be telephoned several times leading up to your stay by the landlady, asking the same questi...

We are very sorry the guests appear not to have enjoyed their stay. Our team are not all "foreigners" as intimated, in fact on the first morning of their stay they were served by my wife who is Scottish. The team members who are foreign can certainly understand many of the different languages spoken by our visitors from the EU, which is beneficial and also those from further afield.
The guests came along in the morning to the house prior to their trip to the islands, they informed us they would be arriving back between 22:00 and 23:00 hours the following night.
They were shown the rooms that morning that they would be getting when they arrived. The couple who were booked for the standard double declined the offer of a seaview double and settled for a standard double as per origional booking. The triple were shown their room with the kingsize poster bed, single bed and ensuite bath and shower.
At no time did the the "spokesman" say he was not happy with the room allocated to him and the room he alludes to was not available and was not suitable for his party as it is for four to five persons.
At the end of the day we are responsible for the room allocations and they were shown the rooms they would be getting, there was nothing disorganised at any point.

Enjoyed our stay here in july ,made all the better for the lovely weather and room ,facing the sea.
Was offered an upgrade of room for a bit extra when we arrived and was very glad we did.
Furnishings a bit fussy and not really to my style ,dust collectors ,though didn't see any dust !
Breakfast was not a relaxed meal ,though, everything a bit to slick ,our hot part arrived well before we were finished our flakes .quality good apart from bread /toast .would have preferred good brown bread or rolls .
Owner was pleasant and knowledgeable about the areas to go to . Will come again !

Room Tip: Room with a view worth the extra!

Arriving on a beautiful weekend, we had stopped at several Guest Houses and hotels looking for a place to stay with no luck. We were so happy when there was one room left at the Corriemar. Our room was on the top floor without a seaview, but we were thankful to find a place. The house is within walking distance of everything and overlooks the water. Billy and Sandy Russell were wonderful hosts. My husband left his favorite hat behind. When we e-mailed them from home, they sent it to us. The breakfast was the best we had in Scotland. I loved the fishcakes. When we left, Billy gave us great directions to get to Dumfries. We look forward to a return visit.
