“warm friendly welcome”

5 of us arrived at this hotel 2 hours later than expected due to traffic problems. We arrived, very hungry, at 9.55 pm and asked if we would be able to get food. We were assured it wasn't a problem. The staff listened to and sympathised with our woes about our travels. The service was very friendly and efficient and the food was good pub fayre and excellent value.

The rooms were clean and spacious.

First appearances can be deceptive! As you walk in the hallway and bar area are newly refurbished. It is when you reach your room that you find it to be totally different. There is a look of tiredness all round. Storage is poor with just a poorly constructed built-in wardrobe with very limited shelf space and just three coat hangers. There are no drawers anywhere in which to put personal items.
Although the bed was comfortable enough the light on the bed-
head was so badly positioned that I struck my head on it more than once as I laid down.
There was no remote control for the tv in the room and when I enquired at the desk I was told by the man that guests stole them. I asked for a replacement and was told there were none. I commented that it was a nuisance to have to get out of bed to change channels or switch off and he pointed to my wife and said: "Let her get out".
The bathroom was a horror story: loose floor tiles that moved as you turned round, a loose toilet seat that meant careful movement was necessary, traces of mildew in corners and a temperamental shower.
There is no lounge as such. There are just a few settees in the corridor and at one end of the hall.
The saving grace for the holiday was that the food was excellent: well cooked, tasty and well presented. The staff, other than the person already mentioned, were very helpful and attentive.

Finding the hotel was already a problem, since it was sold to us as the Town House hotel. Its name, however, is still the Rowan Tree, and we needed a trip to Oban's tourist information centre to sort things out.

We found the hotel in the middle of what looked like a total refurbishment operation, predominantly of the bar area. Refurbishment is actually a very good idea for this hotel, but one may question the bar being the most obvious choice considering the condition of the rooms and beds.

The room we stayed in was a mishmash of old and new, new wallpapers and paint, an old bathroom and the beds and matresses however being old and completeley worn out; one's basically sleeping on the wooden planks underneath.

We were told that they were actually in the middle of replacing the old matrasses by new ones, but clearly hadn't completed this at the time of our stay. Putting two old matrasses on top of each other provided somewhat of a comfortable bed.

There's no phone in the room, so wake-up calls are provided by the old-fashioned bang on the door, which, in an old and therefore noisy hotel is bound to wake up everyone else as well. Breakfast was nothing special and the provisional bar lacked any atmosphere at all. Worse than that, the staff seemed not to take a lot of interest in their guests.

This pleasant place, located close to the quais on the main shopping street, offers good if simple food and pleasant service.
The rooms were a little outdated, but spacious and well painted. The bathrooms were clean and in working order, though a little worn at the edges.
We got good service in the nice, new restaurant, which served British classics like broth, beef, fish&chips and meatpie, accompanied by plenty of vegetables.
The breakfast was a generous buffet.
Service was quick and pleasant.

This may have changed since I stopped here about 3 years ago.

Generally it's a pub. The room that we had was adequate. The room overlooked the main street which is very busy and hence noisy. There are no scenic views from here as it faces the shops and buildings across the road. It is situated in the town centre but that’s about the only plus I can give it.

I stayed at the Rowantree and found it to be a no nonsense hotel with kind, friendly staff. Great Scottish Breakfast and nice rooms.
