Had a walk (or at least we puffed up the hill after our evening meal!) to the tower. You get lovely views from it.

A very pleasant walk to the tower, funnily enough the advertised 144 steps up Jacobs Lader didn't seem as tiring as we expected and we were surprised how quickly we made the ascent. The final 24 steps to the grounds of the Tower itself open out to show wonderfully maintained gardens and a magnificent view across Oban bay.Not much to do when you're up there other than admire the view and congratulate yourself on having made the climb, but all in all, well worth the effort.

I expected the phenomenal views, but not a garden, inside the tower. It was magical, like being in a different world, so pretty, peaceful, quiet and apart from anywhere else. It is popular with, but not over-run, by knowing locals. You can see panoramic views of Oban Bay and town. There's a very good view of Oban Whisky Distillery, and we could just make out guest house. We cheated and took the car. There was plenty of parking. This was our second visit to Oban and I wish we'd come to McCaig's Tower the first time. It takes your breath away, and you should get some ace photos.

We had a quick detour to this unusual folly to log a geocache whilst in Oban for the day. A 15 minute stiff walk uphill from the Harbour road in Oban takes you to the tower which is a striking feature set above the town. No entrance fee to get in and an interesting structure to walk around, the views from here over the bay are well worth the short walk uphill. The walk back down to the town and distillery is equally as fulfilling!

We drove up to the Tower on a rainy morning. Despite the weather we still enjoyed the experience. The small roads leading up to the tower are reasonably marked, so don't be fearful of taking a car. From the parking lot there is an option of walking up the stairs or taking a ramp.
