This is a fantastic building placed high above Oban with the most womderful views of Oban and to the Islands. The Sunsets are magical, we have been to this place quite a lot as we stay in an apartment only a few yards away whilst on holiday in Oban, a highly recommended place to visit.Great for photography.

This place is certainly interesting, if not strange. The tower in Oban Argyll, is a folly built of Bonawe granite, excavated across Airds Bay, on Loch Etive. The structure was commissioned, at a cost of £5,000 sterling (£500,000 at 2006 prices using GDP deflator), by the wealthy, philanthropic banker (North of Scotland Bank), John Stuart McCaig. Mr McCaig's intention was to provide a lasting monument to his family, and provide work for the local stonemasons during the winter months. McCaig was a great admirer of Roman and Greek architecture, and so planned this structure, based on the Colosseum in Rome. So it is, It looks Romanesque. There are a few parking places at the bottom of this Tower. You can walk around it on the paths. It overlooks the sea and you can watch the ferries to Mull and other Isles departing and arriving. The tower overlooks Oban. In fact if you wanted you could sit up at the tower all day. There are seats up there so you can sit down after the short stroll up an incline and steps. There is no entrance fee........

A truly strange place. Try to go there on a Saturday when every newly wedded couple tries to get its photos there. Lot's of fun.

The sun came out on New Years Day and we decided to blow away the cobwebs with a walk up to the tower. It was worth it!

Great views across the harbour and out to the islands. We were jealous of the group who had taken champagne up there to celebrate the New Year!

This is a bit of a climb but well worth the view over Oban bay, you can stand and watch the boats come and go and also the weather coming across from Mull
