“ABSOLUTLEY GRAND”
Reviewed October 10, 2009

Stayed at the Columba for 4 nights from 5th October 2009. Thoroughly delighted with the place. Everything was spot on. Lovely room and bathroom, clean, breakfast buffet style, good choice evening meal with a free glas of wine. All the staff were friendly and accommodating. The manager was a gentleman, the chef did us proud. There was nothing about this hotel that we could fault, and would certainly go back with the coach company that we went with, should they have another trip up to Oban. Thanks to everyone at the Columba.

Heard good and bad reviews of the hotel before we left so was a bit unsure when we were on our way but left very pleasantly suprised and would definetly return.

Stayed Friday and Sat night and found our room refurbished and very pleasing with a brilliant view out onto the harbour. We specifically asked for a refurbished room as i had heard the others might not be great. Room was fine with all the things we expected, ie. tv, good shower, clean, comfortable and more than accommodating. Hotel does in areas look a bit tired but are you really there to access the lightshades or chill out for the weekend!!

Breakfast was really good, buffet of the usuals, cereals, cooked breakfast stuff, rolls, pastries etc. We found there to be plenty of everything and the staff more than happy to help. We had dinner one of the night as it was included in the 2 nights and was ok, nothing brilliant but not shabby either. 6 out of 10, don't expect a michilin star!

Overall thought i would book Columba again but maybe give dinner a miss. Good place for dinner was about 100 yards away called Cuanmor, was top drawer without charging over the odds.

I note that this hotel is ranked 1/6 of all hotels in Oban on Tripadvisor - that's a bit scary !
The location is fantastic, right at the harbour, and there is plenty of public parking available, which is free after 6pm. The hotel itself was obviously a grand old place in it's day, and still has a lot of character, which I suppose is quite charming ! The room was interesting, it had been renovated in a tasteful modern style, but unfortunately the old brass electrical sockets, electric wall heater and prehistoric TV set somewhat spoiled the contemporary effect, but the bathroom was hideously decorated, clean enough, just straight out of the 1970s ! Road noise was a bit of a problem as my room faced the town, and was single glazed. Breakfast was edible, though a bit cold (even though I was practically first down !). I just think for the price you should expect better. Free wifi in all rooms was a nice touch though, with lots of major chains charging a fortune for something that costs them nothing.

This hotel is 'ok' for the £. The newer rooms are better. We asked to moveas no shower in room, new room had new nice clean bathroom. Staff downtrodden. Hotel very tired. Breakfast ok. This hotel is ok for quick sleep before a ferry. We had a great Indian meal at The Tahaj Mahal, 5 min walk from hotel.

This owners of the hotel (McKever Group) are in administration so it is possible that this is having an impact on the hotel. On arrival at the reception the receptionist was dealing with the coffee shop as well.
The room we had been given has been redecorated but when you looked at the ceiling that hadn't been touched.
The bar attached to the hotel was a bit weird with plastic plant pots as light shades, and the music that was playing dreadful i.e. rave.
Breakfast was a bit too greasy. I like a full scottish breakfast but the black pudding was a congealed mess.
It is nice to note that they support the local tesco store as the bread and yoghurts were from tesco.
The location was god as you are right at the harbour

We stayed at the Columba Hotel for 3 days on a package deal of dinner, bed and breakfast with nightly bar credit - it was great value for money and is now our number one hotel in Oban.

We travel to Oban on a regular basis and have tried pretty much all the hotels there; some have been woefully dire, others okay, but the Columba tops our list. As others have said, it's not impressive from the outside; arriving on foot from the train station, we walked around the whole building before we found the entrance! But from the moment we stepped foot inside the door, the warm, welcoming, friendly staff (Sarah in particular) made us feel right at home!

We were allocated a beautiful top floor turret room with stunning views of Oban Bay and which was spacious, airy, comfortable and modern - a real surprise after the dated exterior and scary, clunky, tiny elevator! The restaurant was large and had lovely sea views and the restaurant staff, although overworked and under a great deal of pressure, were efficient, helpful and friendly. The only let-down was the food, which we felt was "production-line" prepared to cater for large coach parties and did not reflect the wonderful fresh produce available in Oban. Don't get me wrong, the food was okay, good choice on the menu and tasty enough, but definitely prepared for the "older" palette as was often bland and unseasoned. Breakfast was buffet-style and more than adequate regardless of your personal taste.

The Harbour Cafe, which opens straight on to the North Pier, has wonderful views of Oban Bay and we spent most of our evenings sitting on the mezzanine looking at the views, sipping our drinks and chatting with the many foreign visitors, another highlight of our stay.

On the whole we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Columba and will definitely be back. The highlight of the whole visit was most definitely the staff at the hotel, and we would like to extend our deepest thanks to all who helped make our visit a memorable one.

Stayed here whilst touring Scotland and were somewhat dissapointed. Location was good in the centre with decent parking. The reception, hotel and rooms are a bit shabby but ok for a one night stopover - you get what you pay for I guess. A big upside was the breakfast which was outstanding and sets you up well for the day. If you want 'no frills' than this is a good hotel.
