“It's ok for a night, prepare for stairs”
Reviewed July 17, 2011

The hotel is very old. The elevator is scary, so you will probably use the stairs a lot. Our room was a corner one and it was very big. The shower had no hot water, just warm! And that was the biggest minus. Otherwise it's super central.

having had a nice day out in Oban we decided to go for a meal so went to the pier to see if we could get somewhere nice with a sea view and good food
we found this bar at the front of the columba and went inside OMG it was the public bar of the hotel it was dirty and run down had upside down plant pots painted for lamp shades the bar area and floors and wall were filthy dirty but however they had an huge menu having asked the barman where we could get a meal he pointed us to the front of the hotel when we went into it we waited for 6 minuets before anyone asked us what we would like we asked for restaurant and they said oh come this way opened a door and said you can eat in here which was back to first bar we declined so they said well can eat up on the balcony we went to balcony to discover stained dirty brown tables and chairs which was a shame as the view was good after looking about the place we decided to leave the hotel the interior looks like a horrendous dump they charge huge s prices to stay there and it could do with a good make over or refurbishment just shabby and i would not stay there

The Columba's main attraction is that it is right slap bang on the pier at Oban and that means you can wander in and out of town at your leisure. The rooms mostly have a stunning sea view and we were lucky enough to get one of the corner rooms which has a bay window and this gives a panoramic view which is outstanding.

The hotel itself is very old and some of the public areas are a bit tired but the bedrooms are spacious, clean, and fresh. Ours had a 30 inch Samsung flat screen tv which was great and a couple of nice lounge chairs at the bay window. free wifi is available in all the bedrooms and the signal is very strong.

The bathroom was tiny and if you stood in the middle you could touch all four sides without being at full stretch.

The shower was also tiny and if you wanted to wash your hair it was so small that you had to be a contortionist to do so. Toiletries were fine and towels were fluffy and new.

Breakfast was buffet style and wasn't great. It was however passable. The ingredients did seem to be very cheap and it looks as if the Columba is trying to save money, eggs were tiny and sausages tasted as if they had a low meat content. You have to make your own toast and there was two double toasters available but most people didn't bother waiting.

Staff were good and every one that passed said hello. The great location has the drawback of having no parking. There are eight spaces for the hotel and these are always filled. Even though the hotel is sided by a public car park we couldn't get a space and were very lucky to get a space a hundred yards away. We were only staying for a night but if you wanted to leave the car it meant that you would need to pay £7.20 a day and even worse you can only get a two hour ticket which means that you have to keep returning for another. There are long stay car parks in town but these are a bit away from the hotel.

Almost all the hotels in Oban are the same style and age as the Columba so there is not that much to choose from but the Columba wins on Location.

Good. The views and the staff. tv's in rooms, superb location.

Bad. The hotel would be a tad depressing in the dark of winter and not very friendly towards disabled users as there are lots of stairs and the worlds worst elevator/lift

Would I stay here again?. Yes. The location and the views make up for the breakfast and the stairs.

Room Tip: ask for a room with a bay window.

Many thanks for your in depth constructive comments about your recent stay at The Columba Hotel Oban. I greatly appreciate you having taken the time to share your thoughts. I have taken the opportunity to relay the feedback to our head office and staff. I am very pleased that the staff came up as one of your good points, and we are very lucky to live in a place with superb views..(that includes winter sometimes) Thank you once again for your feedback and we hope we can welcome you back to the Columba Hotel once again.

Kind regards

a terrible experience, Basil Fawlty territory, receptionist argued with everyone, gave me two keys to decide which was least bad room. The restaurant , please don't even think about it.
Dark gloomy rooms, small windows, very dated and over priced.

Room Tip: stay at a bed and breakfast on the hil not in Oban town

We had a large family room on the third floor with a great view of the harbour. The room was really comfortable and the bathroom very clean and spacious. When we had a problem with the bathroom light it was fixed within 10 minutes and when we requested an ironing board one was brought to our room almost immediately. We ate in the hotel and the food was really delicious. The breakfast was also good. The staff were all helpful and polite. I would recommend this hotel to anyone looking to stay in Oban, we will certainly stay there again if we are in the area. One thing I would suggest is that the ladies toilet is upgraded. I realise it is also used by non-residents when using the public bar but it was very unpleasant and fell short of the qualify of the rest of the hotel.

The hotel was clean, our room was huge, the breakfast was ok.

This room was sold to us as a 'sea view' room & as such we paid extra for this - technically we couldn't see the sea unless we leaned out the window! Our room was side on and we could see the harbour. This I feel should have been stated.

Fantastic hotel. The staff were friendly and always helpful. The manager was attentive with a great sense of humour. No request was too much. My family thoroughly enjoyed staying here. The location is also great.
