“Comfy rooms and friendly service”
Reviewed January 20, 2013

We just stayed overnight at the Oban youth hostel and I have to say I was really impressed. It's a recently renovated building and still has quite a 'new' feeling. We stayed in the quad room which had 2 bunk beds with one of the bottom bunks being a double. We had our own shower and loo which were conveniently separate. The hostel is only a 10 minute walk from the town centre and has stunning views over the water. Their cooked breakfasts could rival any good B & B in the area too! The service was really friendly and welcoming and we will definitely be staying there again when we're next in the area

Room Tip: Pay a little extra to get your own loo!

We decided on a last minute New Year's trip to Oban and landed on our feet as the 2 bedroom flat was still available so we bagged it for 4 nights.

I was a bit worried as to what the flat would be like as at £90 a night, it was £10 cheaper than a 4 bedded en suite room in the Hostel. I shouldn't have worried - it was huge and comfortable! Downstairs there is a large living room with a dining table that seats 8 and your own kitchen. You even have your own boiler so you can control how hot it is (I often find youth hostels to be a bit warm). Upstairs you have 2 large bedrooms (one has a double bed and 3 other bunks, the other has 4 bunk beds) and a bathroom with a good shower and bath.

You still have use of the drying room and laundry facilities and the staff were very helpful too.

If you are organised, you can book and pay using Tesco Vouchers so it was a bargain trip but definitely recommended.

Oban Youth Hostel is a nice place to stay. There was a refurbishment in 2010 and there's all new furniture. You sleep in wooden beds instead of the metal beds which are usually used. Every bed even has an own reading light! There's a big kitchen for self-catering and a big room for breakfast/dinner. The staff is very friendly, you can buy freshly made cake at the reception. Also breakfast is better than the average, you can choose from 4 different cereals, you can have toast or bread, there's cheese and ham, different beverages.
There's one negative point: The showers. Even though they are clean and modern (as the rest of the hostel is), you can only turn it on or off. If you want to shower with warm water, there's so much water coming out, it feels like showering with a fire hose. Also there's no "real" public bathroom (there's two shower/toilet rooms on each floor), so you might no be able to shower or go to the toilet when you want. But that didn't occur to me. After all it was nice staying there.

The hostel has been recently refurbished and has the best facilities of any hostel I have stayed in. Self catering facilities are excellent and there are very comfortable lounges, all with great views over the harbour. The dormitories are comfortable and have en-suite shower and toilet.
Other facilities such as the cycle store and drying room are also very good, and the staff very helpful.

I have to say that everything was going well until we wanted to cook some food. That is when this place actually fell apart. It has one of the most sophisticated Gas cooker systems I have seen in my life. There was a one page document on 'Instructions on using the cooker'.

However, we did not manage to ignite it, neither did the Hostel duty Manager, and we all got taken to different parts of the building to try and cook our meals, in turn.

Looks like the problem was ongoing also from the comments made by other individuals who stayed there longer.

Would recommend as a good place to stay but not if you are going there for a 'Hostel Experience' and want to cook for yourself.

Shame.

Room Tip: Not fit for cooking.

Just back from nights stay at this hostel looking really good on it's refurbishment hostel is in good location and value for money tried b & b's in area but very shabby for the price. I did not try the food but the menu had good selection and reasonably priced, day room was really nice to relax in with good view of boats going out of oban.

Oban Youth Hostel is a beautiful Victorian building. It is the only 5 Star SYHA youth hostel outside Edinburgh. The youth hostel sits on a sea front location with views over the Firth of Lorne and to the Inner Hebrides. Oban Youth Hostel offers a choice of two buildings, consisting of the original Victorian building and modern lodge to the rear, both offering excellent budget accommodation and both are available for RentaHostel. Oban Youth Hostel offers traditional multi-share accommodation and private rooms - all rooms both private and shared are en suite. As you would expect Oban Youth Hostel boasts 2 superb self-catering kitchens but meals are also available in the beautiful Raasay Dining Room. A secret gem at Oban Youth Hostel is the self-contained flat which sleeps up to 8 people and is ideal for families and small groups. Wi-Fi during your stay: We do our best to deliver a free Wi-Fi service but apologise that connectivity, particularly in our rural locations, can be intermittent due to the level of our current broadband provision along with high usage when the youth hostel is busy. Please be assured we are endeavouring to improve where we can. We thank you for your patience and understanding. ... more   less
