Stayed originally for my hubbys 40th birthday a couple of years ago. Stayed this time for our honeymoon on the way up to Skye. The bedroom was gorgeous, number 15 which isn't one of the top ones but is very roomy and has a fab seperate bathroom. All the staff very friendly. Went downstairs for dinner, food all very nicely cooked but not a huge range for vegetarians. The breakfast was good.
The bed had a mattress topper on it and we've been totally converted to these and bought one as soon as we got back!!

Just great! full of character, squeeky wooden floors and all, very friendly helpful staff on hotel and bar/restaurant side. Brilliant value for a large, comfy, clean charming room. Had a fantastic meal, really delicious, very well cooked, imaginatively served in a relaxed atmotsphere by attentive happy staff. The breakfast was equally good. Decent selection of cereals, yoghurts, jam and breads and perfectly cooked hot selections of either a scottish cooked breakfast, kippers or smoked haddock. What a lovely end to a great stay. Well positioned hotel to nip in and out around Inverary. Only downsides are lack of car parking space and a bit of noise travel between rooms. Didn't put us off , but might request a top floor room next time. Will definately return.

Another anniversary meant another stay in The George`s atmospheric Merchant`s room.

Everything was exactly as we remembered it from last year; a spacious, comfortably appointed bedroom with antique furniture and a large jacuzzi bath in a raised corner. I suspect this room might have its own hot water tank as there was certainly no shortage of the stuff. The candles supplied help to create a romantic atmosphere as you sink into the bath with a glass of wine in hand and a chill out cd playing in the background - perfect. The Queen sized bed and pillows were comfortable and adequate respectively.

At night we ate in the George`s reasonably priced restaurant where portions were generous and the quality excellent value for money (my girlfriend`s chunky sirloin steak was perfect and my sea trout steaks were seriously fresh). Service was prompt and friendly.

Despite the live music being cancelled at the last minute owing to illness there was still a good atmosphere in both bars helped by the ever attentive and buzzy staff.

We enjoyed a cooked Scottish breakfast in our room (order the night before) - good quality but heavy on the stomach if you`re still full from your dinner.

A late check out was no problem and meant we could jump back into the jacuzzi.

Over-running our new check-out time by 20 minutes was dealt with in good humour by Jennifer at reception. She encouraged us to take a look at one of their recently completed new rooms (room 9 I think) which was very nice - more of a suite with a jacuzzi, table and chairs and sea views and decorated in lighter tones than many of the older rooms.
My only slight complaint would be to echo previous reviews citing the feint television reception. Whilst I realise that poor analogue reception is common throughout the Highlands I do believe that a £140 room should come with digital television. Unless they plan on doing away with all their televisions the George will have to remedy this soon as the analogue signal will be switched off for good within the next couple of years. In the meatime bring your own dvd`s and cd`s!
All in all another hugely enjoyable and relaxed stay.

p.s. If you are looking for an enjoyable half day hike or two hour cycle through spectacular countryside I can thoroughly recommend Glen Shira(one mile south of town on the Glasgow road) ; old Caledonian forest, crumbling bridges, water falls and Rob Roy`s house (if you can find it!).

It is worth upgrading to one of the more expensive rooms. There is something appealing about sitting in a roll top bath in your room, rather than in a bathroom. Accommodation was lovely. The food is pub grub, but there is an extensive, reasonable menu and the food was very well cooked. The hotel is a good base to visit various west coast locations, and the comfortable rooms also make it an ideal place just to relax and chill out.

I have absolutely nothing negative to say about this atmospheric, hospitable, characterful and value-for-money establishment. My brother and I had stayed before and returned this year for what we thought would be only one night en route to an apparently idyllic self catering cottage on the shores of Loch Awe. We had a lovely, clean, well presented, spacious room each with all the facilities we needed, the catering was great ( my poached egg and smoked haddock breakfast will live long in the memory and in itself warrant another visit ) and all the staff were so friendly and with an excellent sense of humour, especially the lady on reception. A very convenient short step across the road of course is the most wonderful "taste before you buy" Loch Fyne whisky shop. As I say we thought it would be only the one night but when we arrived at our self catering cottage, that we had booked and paid for months before, the owners claimed it was double booked and that they did not have any contact details to even have been able to warn us in advance. It was very difficult to find somewhere else at such short notice but the George were really helpful in squeezing us back in for another night, so at least we had the pleasure of a return visit to a place I would unhesitatingly recommend and to which we are certain to return.

We stayed in this hotel for 2 nights. The room we booked was at the back of the hotel, away from the street and other rooms, and relatively quiet. The room was clean and comfortable. The king-size mattress however was clearly damaged, with a large dip in the right side. We asked to be moved after the first night, and apart from being assured by the desk clerk that all their mattresses were "new", we were eventually moved to another room at the front of the hotel. The new room had a much better super-king mattress, but was relatively noisy due to being directly above the public bar and looking out on the main street. Headroom in the shower was also very limited in this room due to the bathroom floor being a couple of feet higher than the floor of the room (there are a couple of steps inside the bathroom). I'm 6'1" and I only just managed to get my head under the shower head without touching the ceiling! There was also a lot of building work going on outside during our stay, but this was obviously not the fault of the hotel.

The hotel restaurant can be easily recommended. There are a couple of other places to eat in the town, but the food at the George is up there with the best gastro-pub cuisine. Unfortunately the same cannot be said of the breakfast, which was mediocre at best.

This is a classic 18th century Georgian hotel overlooking the main street of one of the finest planned towns in Britain and still very reasonably priced. The master rooms are huge and sumptuously decorated with original floors, antiques, paintings and sash windows. Very friendly and helpful staff (the hotel has been run by the same family since the 19th century). The pub and restaurant were superb. Excellent choice of Scottish ales and whiskies. Breakfast excellent.
