“Amazing vegetarian food”
Reviewed January 11, 2013 via mobile

We dropped in for lunch and we were immediately sorry we had brought the car. The number if amazing whiskeys was breathtaking!
Such an ambience and attentive, friendly staff. We visited off season but it was still bustling. The vegetarian lunch selection was innovative (not the usual lazy vegetarian food you find off the beaten track) and probably the best we sampled on our week long stay in the region. Sorry we did not know about this place in advance and could of planned a proper night out here. Highly recommended!

We stayed in the Merchants room, we have stayed here a few times previously and if we're in the area at the very least have lunch at The George.

The room was great, quirky and fun. If you want bog standard clinical hotel rooms then this is not for you. We like unusual, different where possible. Only criticisms we had were that the loo role holder had a bit missing and it looked a bit pants for £165 per night. Also on previous occasions there has been nice scented oil for the bath and there were also candles available. They may have got rid of the candles as a fire hazard, but a bath of water with no scent wasn't as nice as scented oil.

Our meal was lovely, steaks were delicious and the wine was great too. Would've liked a bit more toast with the pate for £5.75 (2 pieces), but we ordered additional garlic bread.

We love the bar in The George, every time we've been there is live music and it's a lively pub. The band were wicked (local band) and we really enjoyed it.

Breakfast was huge and lovely again.

Receptionist was lovely and friendly. We had friendly service in the bar and restaurant too.

We will be back, hopefully get a chance to try the Library Room next time (it was booked already). I recommend if you want either the Merchants or Library room that you book as well in advance as possible (for weekends anyway).

Room Tip: Book in advance, this is a popular hotel. I can only comment on the Merchants room and a family room...

Stayed in room 38 and was very disappointed:

Smallish room with no chairs to relax in.
Chipped and dirty tea set.
Shower not working.
Filthy bathmat.
Toilet brush holder full of dirty water.

Surely it is the responsibility of management to ensure that rooms are of a high standard of cleanliness. We were going to book dinner in the hotel, but after seeing the standards of cleanliness in the rooms, decided to dine elsewhere.

Room Tip: Do not choose room 38. At £95 per night it was overpriced for what was an average budget type room.

We've been treated to the most special few days. The staff are wonderful, and Donald the owner is the warmest of hosts. The food was stunning and the plates were piping hot. A truely enchanting Hogmanay!

We had a meal on the 30th December. Very Busy night we are regulars but got to say the meal was poor. The Fish Chips were greasy, loop warm, No garnish and it looked like it was chucked on the plate. The may have bought it from the chippy down the road the way it was presented.
This was poor for a tenner.

Don't get me wrong this is one of the best Argyll has to offer.

Don't let it slide folks.

Not sure how many times we've stayed there now, but always worth the 500 mile round trip. Some minor improvements since our last visit, but all in keeping. Food and service were as good as ever. And walk it off in the morning with a walk up to the tower...

We stayed in room 6. The room was clean, big bed, modern shower and a jacuzzi bath on a platform. Bar staff were amazing, hendricks with gin and cucumber was my favourite! Food great, service great, very busy so had a lovely buzz. When a group of women were shouting and singing they were asked politely to quiet down as they were in the restaurant. Band played on saturday until after 1am. Very traditional set up, the george was faultless. Worth paying the extra for the better room! Will be going again! Suitable for all ages!
