We arrived to be told we did not have a booking. They had lost it. Gave us a room for the first night as the next night they were full. We ate in the first night, very, very ordinary, not at all good.By breakfast they said we could stay in the same room no explanation at all. Breakfast again very, very ordinary. The young man who greeted us(the barman) when we arrived did offer a mumbled apology he was clearly embarrassed but no one else did certainly not any manager or owner.
This Hotel could be so good. Stunning views over to Islay. Lovely well appointed rooms. Nice décor in the rest of the Hotel.
But front of house & the restaurant really lets it down badly

This is a cracking location, with friendly staff, that lacks a chief or even a cook that can make a cooked breakfast.

It was a shambles and on the first day they only had one person on waitressing and it was her second day.

Make sure you have transport because the food really let's this place down, the evening meal was ok but it could have been better.

Get the food side sorted out here ASAP

The plumbing also needs fixed as the water in the sink and shower took a wee while to drain away.

Room Tip: Ask for a front room with plumbing that works. No swimming pool but a beach out front and no fitness...

Have just returned from a 2 day stay bought from Amazon Local. We paid for a sea view and had to do a bit of negotiations with the hotel staff when booking to make sure we got the 2 days in the same room which was great. We stayed in room 3 which was large and clean with a gorgeous view out to the Atlantic, the bath itself seemed a little tired and probably needs replaced but was clean and the shower fantastic.

We ate in the hotel both nights and the food was ok over the 2 nights we had the steak pie - which was asked to be served with bread and butter which was served quartered - no need, I would agree with the description of the burger and the hunters chicken which was just ok. The white chocolate cheesecake was rich and delicious. The prices are around £9 per main which seems reasonable but could definitely do with a change of menu, which with the new owners I believe is about to happen. Breakfast was lovely albeit minus black pudding which I don't eat so wasn't bothered.

Some of the staff need some training on being a bit more punctual, just a bit too relaxed but they were fairly new so am sure this will improve with experience. The staff and the owner made you feel very welcome. The outside area could do with a regular clean as the small bins outside weren't emptied the whole time I was there.

All in all I felt that we got a good deal and that the upgrade was definitely worth the money and if the same deal came up again would consider going back, especially if we got the same weather.

Room Tip: Definitely see if you can get a sea view room.

lovely hotel ,fantastic location, Good luck to the new owners. lots of small details need to be ironed out but hope these will improve with time... staff not confident enough, bit scruffly dressed... food was good if portions bit too small.... lack of atmosphere .. very quiet for the time of year. asked for up grade but was told fully booked ?? only saw 2 other couples the whole 2 days.. ? but staff when arrived were very friendly cant fault that our room was lovely but no view which we were dissapointed also the smoke from wood burner outside very strong and if the windows open the smoke gets in a wee bit ! but outside view great and the sunset is the best !! but lacks colour or any atractive features to draw you in .. signpost on road not far enough away to give plenty warning just appeared too quick !! lovely area and would go back when more improvements are made . best of luck !!

We booked this on an Amazon deal, to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We love this part of the country, and arrived in lovely weather and enjoyed sitting on our sea-view balcony the first evening watching a glorious sunset behind the isles of Islay and Jura. The room was clean and comfortable enough, although the balcony had not been swept properly.
We had difficulty obtaining hot water from the bathroom taps before breakfast or in the evening, but got plenty of instant hot water from the shower.
We really enjoyed our stay, and would go back. The food was very nice, and the sea views from the dining room perfect. The service from the reception staff was perfect, although some of the waiting staff seemed to be new.

Room Tip: You pay extra for a sea view, and would be missing out to not get one, although if the weather is mi...

To start, we picked up a deal for this hotel via Amazon local in May, and at this time Jamie was in charge of the hotel.
When we arrived, ( 19/06/2014 ) we were told the hotel had changed hands two weeks ago and all the previous staff had left, but they would honor the deals made ( I should hope so ).
Anyway room was good and the view amazing from our sea view balcony, ( so far so good ) however upon looking around the room, my wife had noticed the toilet bowel was not properly cleaned, and that the cleaning cream was still lying open on the bath, ( not great ). Would agree with tansy36 in regards to the state of the rooms.
As we had arrived after six we decided to give the food a try, the place was deserted, my wife and I the only two eating in the dining area. We both ordered the mini chicken kebabs and mini is the right word, six minuscule bits of chicken on two cocktail sticks with salad, which didn`t even have any dressing on it. Now to mains I had got the Aberdeen Angus burger, my wife the beer battered fish and chips, which supposedly came with peas and salad ( peas missing ) she said it was ok. To mine now, the bun hadn`t been toasted, was dry, the burger looked like it was re-heated and was completely dried out and tasteless, lost on the huge bun, mountain of iceberg lettuce and cucumber covering it ( very disappointed ) the only up side to the meal was the hand cut and well seasoned chips. All this and a couple of drinks came to forty pounds.
The staff seemed in-experienced and not very customer focused, with the exception of Sandra, who was very helpful, cheery and full of local facts.
I won`t go into to much detail about breakfast, but don`t expect any black pudding which is on the menu, enough said.
We were really looking forward to our break, especially after having read the previous reviews.
I know it had changed hands, but being attentive, customer focused and professional is`nt to much to ask.
All in all would`nt recommend this hotel to eat at, the rooms at the front with balcony are nice, but aren`t enough to save this hotel, The new owner really needs to work at it a lot harder. We spent the rest of our break in and around campbeltown, which with the great weather was brilliant. Will definitely be back to the area, just not to this hotel.

Room Tip: If you are staying here it is worth paying the little extra for the sea facing rooms, excellent view...

But we were were expecting the room to be slightly cleaner ,mirror was dirty walls were stained . Quite a lot of dust inside bedside lamps which didn't work . Had to go back and forward to reception for bath mats none supplied supplies of milk satchets of coffee all of which was given with a smile and a sorry ! But the state of the mugs supplied ! they hadn't been near a dishwasher . Staff were all lovely very warm and friendly and doing their best Including the barman who I nearly swallowed when I realised we had paid £11 for two small glasses of red wine sorry Putechan I do realise that there are new owners but surely new brooms sweep clean !

The Putechan Hotel is a former Duke of Argyll’s hunting lodge dating from 1872. It lies on the western edge of Kintyre facing the dramatic Atlantic Ocean with stunning views of the Isles of Islay, Jura and Gigha, together with incredible sunsets. It is surrounded by rugged grounds with an amazing pebble beach, strewn with giant rocks for our customers to enjoy. Take a walk along the beach or perhaps a BBQ while looking out for the dolphins and minke whales. The hotel, now under new ownership, has been extensively refurbished and extended, and can now offer a variety of bedrooms to suit different tastes and pockets; from the bridal suite with roll-top window bath looking out to Jura and Islay and balcony facing the ocean, our 1st floor premier rooms with balconies, ground floor doubles with sea views and a linked disabled room. We can also offer more budget accommodation in our rear facing rooms and ‘bunk rooms’. We also have a fully refurbished and extended Venue catering for a variety of events from weddings (up to 120 seated). Attached to the south wing is the sensational ‘Rock Room’ with one whole wall formed by a massive rock with French doors to the rear and front with stunning views over the ocean. The room seats around twenty and could be used for meetings, smaller intimate weddings, yoga/fitness work-outs, business meetings, or an exhibition hall for local artists. Tell us what event you want to run and we will make sure it is one to remember. The south-facing courtyard is a natural sun-trap and looks over onto the private beach. With practically no light pollution, and clever outdoor lighting systems the Putechan enjoys fantastic stargazing on a cloudless night. ... more   less
