My second time having dinner at the Anchor and absolutely brilliant both times. Very warm welcome and the food is outstanding. A lot of fish dishes but there's still a great choice if you don't like fish. One of my favourite places in the area.

Whether you are traveling to the Montrose / Angus area on business or pleasure, I would highly recommend the Anchor Hotel. The bar and kitchen staff are very friendly and helpful and Gary the owner cooks a mean full breakfast to your liking. Jan, Gary's wife also makes you feel welcome. I stayed here last night and had the best beer battered fish & chips (bar meal) that I can remember. There is a varied bar meal menu, specials board or restaurant menu if you prefer. Myen-suit room (No.4) was compact but very comfortable and had all the amenities one requires for a pleasant stay and good nights sleep after a 6 hour drive from West Yorkshire. The added bonus is the location. Johnshaven harbour is a lovely peaceful setting, a great place to end the day and start the next feeling refreshed. Thanks to Gary, Jan & the staff.

My husband, teenager daughter, dog and I had a one night stay start of March 2013 in a cottage let out by the Anchor Hotel. Had a great stay the cottage was very comfortable, spacious, spotlessly clean, had everything that you could need including plenty wardrobe space, lots of fresh clean towels. Lovely view over the harbour. We had our evening meal in the Hotel food and service was good all staff were very friendly. Highly recommended.

Haven't stayed but had dinner upstairs in restaurant. Food and service very good. Quite alot of fish on the menu which you expect from restaurant in fishing village. Service and price good for dishes offered. Would definately go back.

Stayed here for a night to be near a friends' house. Lovely warm welcome from all the staff, lovely clean room. Probably the most comfortable bed I've ever slept in!
Would loved to have stayed longer, the menu looked gorgeous and our breakfast was ace - nothing too much trouble. We'll be back for sure :)

We dine here quite frequently and have always found the food to be first-rate. Freshly prepared dishes, using locally sourced ingredients. The lobster and chilli soup, when available, is to die for!
On our last visit I had the pheasant, which was delicious, although there was a pellet in it, but this just serves to prove that the bird was shot in the wild, and not farmed.

The only downside is the unprofessional waitress we've had on the last few occasions. She's a fairly pleasant young girl, who I think just needs proper training. She reaches over other diners to place dishes on the table, and when she brought our dishes on our last visit, my partner had ordered steak and was told that she'd be right back with a steak knife, she then took orders from another table, before returning a few minutes later with peppercorn sauce for him which she had also forgotten, before leaving us once again to finally fetch his steak knife. But the poor waitressing will not prevent me from returning, as said, the food is really lovely!

The upstairs restaurant has a nice, relaxed atmosphere, and we mostly eat here, as opposed to the bar. The bar meals are generally very good, but it is very noisy, and can get quite rowdy, and the locals often stare at you when you walk in, just not as pleasant to eat in the bar!

I've not had an overnight stay here, but family friends have and said it was very noisy in their room, loud music and shouting travelling up from the bar.

I'd advise a booking for the upstairs restaurant, and any one dining will not be disappointed with the great meals on offer!

I stayed here for one night on business and for what I was staying for it was ideal. However I would have struggled staying in that particular room for any length of time as there wasn't room for a suitcase the room was so small. The bathroom has a shower, toilet and tiny sink but did the job. The TV is flatscreen with freeview which was nice though it was at a rather awkward angle on the wall. I could hear the person in the next room moving about and the floorboards creaking, I was also next to the door in the corridor so there was noise from that. As a female lone traveler I would have preferred it if there was a chain on the door as when you can hear people moving around so close it is easy to worry about security.
Downstairs in the bar people were really friendly and there was a good menu with plenty of fish and seafood - I had the best seafood pie I have ever had in my life there. Breakfast was upstairs in the restaurant and again the scrambled eggs were very well cooked - the kitchen cant be faulted and the staff are very friendly and helpful.
There didn't seem to be a hotel car park but there are plenty of places within the village to park your car, less than 1 min to the hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for a larger room away from the door in the corridor
