Owner description: Visit this charming rustic beauty of a forerunner to the Industrial revolution. The rural corn mill, still run today by the gentle flow of Barry Burn, was the ancestor to today's food preparation processes and a myriad of complex technologies that sprung from simple water-wheels, gears, pulleys and belts. Enjoy the tranquility of this renewable and sustainable approach to work & food in bygone days. Listen to the splash of the wheel and the rumble of the mechanics as the building shakes itself into life. Tours explaining the significance of these mills and telling some of the tales and stories of those that worked in and around these hubs of community are offered and bookings can be made to see flour being ground.

“Brilliant afternoon out”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 5, 2013

Have passed this many times and so glad we decided to spend an afternoon there. We were greeted by Peter Ellis who was fascinating and spent a good bit of time explaining about the mill and the history. We were given a guided tour by Jenny who was very friendly and knowledgeable. It was a great afternoon. Nice walks as well surrounding the mill. Kids of ALL ages would love it!

“Unexpectedly fascinating!”

A little bit off the beaten track, but well worth the effort, Barry Mill is a fascinating building, an din a beautiful location.
We visited on a weekday, so had the place to ourselves for much of the visit. We were given a personal tour by guide, Carolyn Peters, who is an absolute encyclopaedia of information about mills and their engineering - I've visited water mills before, but never really appreciated the complex mechanisms, and why some of the tasks were carried out in a specific order. This tour really allowed us to understand, and enjoy, so much more. Nothing was too much trouble for Carolyn, and she added so much to the visit.
I believe that the local Friends of Barry Mill put on some events for both children and adults, if you can time your visit to coincide.
Highly recommended!

As National Trust Members, my friend and I visited, for the first time, Barry Mill. We were, first of all delighted with the warm welcome from Tour Guide Carolyn Peters. Her enthusiasm and knowledge of the history and workings of the mill was amazing. She made our visit very special, one of which we will remember, and talk about for some time to come. Thank you Carolyn.

“unexpected enjoyment from this visit.”

We were really just passing through this wee village on our way to Carnoustie. We decided to drop in to the Barry mill and what a fantastic afternoon we had. The your guide made it interesting I have to say if you are going to see this old water mill please take the proper tour with the guide. She made this tour interesting and told us where of the old sayings derived from. Would recommend this highly. Beautiful surroundings as well, take a picnic with you though as they don't have a cafe and go in the summer when the weather is more likely to be warm.

played poo sticks in the mill race and that was great fun.
The mill was a good experience as the process was explained so simply. Our second visit and probably not the last.
