“lovely hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 30, 2013

Stayed at this hotel on the 17th March and had a lovely stay. We had a large family room overlooking the sea. It was nicely decorated and well maintained. The leisure facilities were of a very high standard and were thoroughly enjoyed. We had dinner in the bar so can't comment on the restaurant but the meal we had was lovely and piping hot. Carnoustie is the place to visit if your a golfer but we're not so probably will not be back but all in all had a lovely stay in a lovely hotel.

Booked online deal room was tired although clean and comfortable. Imagine these deal rooms are of the basic standard. The rest of hotel was nice although maintenance budget could do with increasing (painting, soft furnishing, window cleaning). All staff we found to be welcoming, attentive and professional. Breakfast was good and served (not buffet). We had meal in the bar which has relaxed atmosphere prices start £10 for meal. Gym and pool facilities are slightly compacted but very enjoyable can get busy as locals also use these facilities. Will definetly return only with golf clubs next time as courses were in great condition even after the recent weather. Will keep eye out for future deals.

Booked a one night stay with my 14 year old son as we had booked to play two of the three golf courses on the site. Paid £85 for bed and breakfast which i thought was decent value and decided to have dinner at the hotel the night we stayed (24.3.13) the ladies behind the bar were charming and friendly and nothing was too much trouble for them. The dinner itself was very good but the hotel must have been busy as it was almost 90 minutes between ordering two courses and the second course arriving- which was too long by at least 30 minutes IMO. The cooked English Breakfast was good but the portion was a tad small bearing in mind we were about to brave the winter elements on the golf course and the service was again on the slow side.....Apart from that it was a very pleasant stay at the hotel and the room was big enough for the two of us. Would stay again if playing golf at Carnoustie. Will Give the service element 4/5 simply because of the impeccable manners of the ladies behind the bar who looked after us both on sunday evening and monday afternoon.

i know there was a wedding party at the hotel on the saturday night (23-3) which may have been one reason for the slowish service on the sunday- we tried to book the saturday but it was full..............

Currently staying at this hotel. Have another night 2 go & hoping things improve!!!!!! Arrived yesterday to very helpful receptionist. Room overlooks car park & was clean & tidy however there was only 1 hand towel not enuf sugar for a cup of t and no little biscuits, for a 4* hotel this was a bit disappionting, however these are just little things that make your stay pleasant when away from home. It is feather pillows on bed and we asked at reception for a change & this was done immediately. Dinner was included on the first night so we made our reservation for 8pm. When we arrived in the dining room it wasnt busy. We unfortunately couldnt make head nor tail of the menu but I decided to give it a go, my husband asked if he could swap to the bar menu and was advised it was 2 busy in the bar so had to choose from the 'fancy' menu. We struggled with the meal which took ages!!!!!! Approx 10 mins minimum between courses (would hate to be there on a busy night!!!) my husband ordered the pasta dish for his main which he couldnt eat as he thought it was oily so we swapped as I thought he was being choosy but when I tried the dish it was very oily and left it. Comment from the chef was 'if we had said b4 we ordered he would hav made it different' how could we do this if we didnt hav a clue what we were ordering & no one seemed to want to help us with the menu!!!!! Staff were more interested in setting empty tables for breakfast. Breakfast this morning was disappionting!!! Had to ask for bowls for cereal!!! Had to ask the waitress to come and take our order for our cooked part of the meal as they forgot us!!!!!!! Breakfast was ok but I wont be having the bacon tomorrow think it had been grilled for 30 seconds only!!!!! On leaving the dining room this morning I overhead a woman asking @ reception if she could eat in the bar this evening instead of the dining room & was informed she could up to the value of £20. Can I ask why people arent given this option on checking in??? We would have taken this option and ate in bar last night as food looked good, fish size of a whale wi chunky chips and my husband was salivating at the look of the burgers.
This is our second stay here we came here 3 years ago and on that occasion our stay was excellent!! We were able to choose from the bar menu and breakfast was superb. Come on carnoustie hotel pull your socks up!!!!! This is not a good impression of a 4* scottish hotel.
We have read other recent reviews on trip adviser where the manager has commented on peoples reviews but has never replied to any comments about the food. Will he this time??????
One small thing there is no information in the rooms about amenities in hotel, such as what time the leisure club opens and closes, the dining times, the bar times, if they provide a laundry service etc, (maybe our is just missing).

Room Tip: Ask for an even numbered room as these appear to be mostly on the golf course side of the hotel.

Thank you for your review.
I am disappointed that I did not have the opportunity to respond to your comments whist you were here at the hotel, when I am sure your issues could have been resolved to your satisfaction.
We are very happy to have guests on dinner inclusive packages dine from the bar menu if they wish, and it is disappointing that we did not communicate this to you, my apologies.
I am unsure why you found it difficult to understand our restaurant menu which is a choice 3 course menu with additional supplements on some dishes.
I apologise that the pasta was not to your satisfaction and note your comments, thank you.

The hotel is very nice and the room was a good size,i think a short break in the summer months would be lovely with its situation right on the beach overlooking the golf course, but unfortunately we came here in march and the weather was terrible and Carnoustie does not have many restaurants thus we were forced to take our evening meals at the hotel. The cost for very poor quality meals was to my mind excessive. i.e. very small burger and chips with rocket salad £10.95 haddock and chips with rocket salad £11.50. The bar prices were also high but not unusually high for this standard of hotel.
We came on a weekend break and the price for the bed and breakfast deal was very reasonable but the prices i have quoted are for bar meals the a la carte prices were more expensive.

Used this hotel for a Anniversary / Birthday getaway prompted by an online offer at £ 129 for two nights B&B , dinner on first night only. It is at first sight well appointed but when you look a bit longer the cushions in the bar are pretty threadbare . Quality is in the detail and this is not a Quality Hotel. We found the book in very matter of fact .
The bar staff were more interested in themselves than the customer .The beer choice at the bar very poor . This is a hotel which must be on the route for monied Americans doing the Scottish Golf Circuit , really sad that there were none of the many excellent locally produced ales available in either draft or bottle . Malt selection was poor.
At Dinner they managed to get the order wrong twice and there were not many in the dining room at all. Food was good but nothing to write home about..
At Breakfast the sausages were of shockingly poor quality , we did not eat them past one bite . It was like the cheapest brand from Iceland.
It was clean and comfortable , rooms not particularly big. We also got one overlooking the car park and given that the place was nearly empty shame nobody thought outside the box and offered one at the front. There are no room safes which is not acceptable for 4 star.

By contrast we lunched out at the Harbour Inn in nearby Arbroath. They have the correct approach ; a smiling welcome , wonderful bowl of Arbroath Smokie Chowder( a local speciality) , excellent local beer on tap.

There was never any obvious management at the Carnoustie hotel to talk to . should he/she read this I suggest they take their staff for lunch in Arbroath on a best practice visit.

Thank you for your review.
Disappointed to read your comments and apologise that we were unable to meet your expectations on this occassion.
With 3 draught lagers, 2 draught ales and draught Guiness available we consider this to be a reasonable range to offer.
Calders bar stocks approximately 25 malts covering each of the classic malt areas, again a choice which we feel is reasonable.
Safety deposit boxes are located at reception and area available to all our guests.
Thanks again.

We booked online on a Sunday morning for a stay that night and got a great deal at £55 b+b.
Our first impressions were great; we got a nice welcome at reception and the lobby area looked grand.
We were given a room overlooking the car park which was a bit disappointing given the hotel appeared to be very quiet but for the money we paid we were not too upset. I agree with other reviewers that the rooms are tired and in need of an upgrade but it was clean, warm and comfortable. We used the pool, jacuzzi etc and found this area fine but very busy with non-residents particularly in the morning before breakfast.
We didn't use the bar or restaurant except for breakfast but it looked really nice.
We had a good nights sleep, the bed was comfortable and it was very quiet despite our room being over the reception and car park.
The breakfast selection was good but I found the quality of the cooked items not the greatest. On my next visit I would stick with eggs only. We enjoyed the view over the golf course and watched the golfers teeing off while we had our coffee.
Overall for the price we paid we really enjoyed our stay and would definitely return.
