We turned up on a Saturday night with no booking, and we're happy to be offered a table. The attentive staff were friendly, but not intrusive. With the single exception of the paella (which was more like tomato rice), our meals were lovely. The scallops and pork belly were beautifully seasoned, the calamari fresh, hot, and crunchy. My main, a special of the day, lemon sole, was beautifully cooked, and served with spring vegetables. Our desserts, a creme brûlée, and a cheese plate were very nice. All in all, next time we're in Arbroath, we'll be looking to book a table so we can return.

It's a while since Catriona and I dined in the Old Boatyard, and being in Arbroath we decided to see if a non-booked table was available. One was, and we were greeted warmly and politely by the staff, who showed us to a table near the window with a magnificent view across the harbour and with the famous Bell Rock Lighthouse clearly visible on the horizon.

After a few minutes a waitress came and took our order which consisted of a starter and two main courses. It seemed an inordinately long wait for the starter (sour dough breads and selection of dips) which disappointingly never appeared. When the waitress brought our main courses I mentioned the starter to her and she said it was on its way! We're still waiting for it.

This is a lovely restaurant. The staff are friendly. The food is excellent. But, this evening was a disappointment. Hopefully there will be an improvement in the service by the time of our next visit.

I used to be a real fan of this lovely restaurant where good food and knowledgeable and courteous service were always a joy to experience. However, my trip today unfortunately changed my opinion. The food was average and portions of the salon timbale were a lot smaller than they used to be, but what stood out for me was the lack of care and attention from the waiting staff. We were given one menu between four of us, waited a long time for our drinks (restaurant only had a few covers) and we were never offered bread or oatcakes. Following the meal, we weren't asked if we had enjoyed our food and it seemed like we were disturbing the servers's conversation when we asked for the bill. All in all, not a patch on the quality of food and service we were used to having here.

Our family spent a very pleasant Sunday lunch here today. The food was good, and the very pleasant and helpful staff really made our experience. It was my granddaughter's birthday and staff organised her cake and were really lovely with everybody in our party. Thank you very much.
