“5 Nights at Rattray Head”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 2, 2013

Perfect location for getting away from it all. Very relaxing stay with all mod cons although you need to make sure you've got food with you as 'it's a lighthouse' so no shop around the corner! But complementary drinks available. Rob is a great host, always checking everything is OK. I was travelling on my own but had the whole of an upstairs flat to myself for a couple of nights before having to move downstairs but was then compensated by 3 nights in a double bed with still a room all to myself, so luxury for a hostel and all for £15 a night. What's not to like. A wonderful beach awaits which is a very short walk over the amazing sand dunes. A wildlife paradise with many seals close to shore, gannets diving, lots of other birds around and bats. Wouldn't hesitate to go there again.

If you are looking for a complete get away, miles of beach no traffic just the sounds of the sea then Rattray Head owned by Rob and Val offers just that.
The Hostel is certainly no frills and in need of a lick of paint but its clean, plenty of hot water and a comfy bed. I brought a large dog and a small horse and both were made very welcome and although not set up for horses Rob gave us the freedom of his fenced in garden, complete with Viking Ship! A great place to recharge batteries.

You cannot travel in this area without a night at the Rattray Eco-Hostel its absolute heaven. We stayed just for one night and arrived on cycles after a very long day cold and very hungry a hot shower, a well equiped kitchen for meal prep and an amazing wood burned we were revitilised and relaxed. The beds were very snuggly and warm, just what we needed.

After reading the reviews here, we were a bit disappointed. We stayed in the light house keeper's cottage. The double bed was comfortable enough and the shared kitchen was adequately equiped. This was once a beautiful building. It has been maintained just enough to be acceptable, but there is certainly potential for so much more. The is a faint odor of humanity in the pillows and mattress, which a good airing out and a can of Fabreeze (sp?) fabric spray could improve. The sheets seemed freshly washed though. Rob, the owner, was friendly enough.

This coast does not have the spectacular scenery of the rugged West coast around the Isle of Skye. There are nice rolling dunes and a lovely light house, which could be magical under the right conditions, but the near by beach was spoilt with a rather large amount of litter. . . which could easily be cleaned up by the hostel owners.

At 45 pounds for our double room, we did not think the hostel a great value. There are plenty of B and B's in the area for between 50 and 60 pounds for more high end accommodation which includes a huge Scottish cooked breakfast for two people.

So, I guess it depends on your travel style. If you are a back packer traveling with friends or a family on a tight budget who needs a kitchen in their "port in the storm". . . this place could be perfect for you!

Room Tip: Go to the Isle of Skye instead.

My partner and I stayed in the lighthouse keeper apartment with our two children and to say we had an adventure was an understatement. His uncle was the light housekeeper and lived there so it was very touching to be able to visit and stay. The surrounding are second to none, even on a wild rainy day it is beautiful. If you are looking to get away I would highly recommend this place. Rob and Val are amazing and very accommodating . We overstayed our welcome on the check out due to adverse weather and poor phone signals and Rob was great. A lovely couple with an amazing vision. It is a work in progress but the character this gives is fantastic. The website is honest and gives a good description of the hostel and the local attractions. If you are looking to create memories this is the place to go. X

The place is wonderful. We spent 3 nights in the old light house supply building - pictured above - in February '12. It was very warm and cozy. This part of Scotland is one of the best places for seeing the Northern Lights (alas we saw no performance!). It gets much better weather and clearer skies than places to the west and south. (you cant get much further east than this in Scotland.) If you visit in the summer you will not be plauged by midges which inhabit 99.99% of the rest of wild Scotland. It is a bird watcher's paradise. We saw thousands of migrating geese and lots of other things too - but not being a twitcher I cant tell you what they were. The beach is truly spectacular too!
Other reviewers speak amply of the hospitality and welcome and we endorse these totally.

-Many thnks Rob and Val, and apologies for taking so long to getting round to writing on trip advisor. It is now April '12. Have a great summer.

We spent 2 days here in the middle of February and had such a good time that we are already considering going back. We arrived on a dark and very windy night and we're slightly concerned about where the hell we were but we were treated to a very warm welcome and within an hour had a warm fire and comfy seats to relax into. The next day we enjoyed about 2 miles of the 11 miles of completely deserted beach which was a delight for our somewhat city bound dog ( and us as well). This freedom actually made the entire trip worthwhile. We also explored some of the local area and found there would be plenty of things to do for both dog and non dog owners, if you were to inexplicably get bored of the beach!!!

Overall the hostel is warm, clean and comfortable. To agree with some other reviewers the road to the hostel is also fairly potholed but given the location is would unreasonable to expect a fully paved road right up to the beach - it doesn't take long to get along and the trip is more than worth it.

Rob was incredibly helpful and friendly, popping into give us weather updates and check we were ok, but all done very unobtrusively. He also suggested places we could go which would be weather and dog appropriate.

Just a note on the weather - its Scotland, be prepared for all eventualities!! We got arctic winds but it almost made it all the more enjoyable being holed up in front of the fire. The draft proofing on the building must be immense!!

All in all we loved it and were gutted to be coming even though we were only there for 2 days! Bring on more school holidays.
