make very nice panini (which, by the way, is in plural) and is a great place to come on a Sunday afternoon just for a hot chocolate, brownie and a good second hand book.

I come to this cafe when ever I visit Aberdeen. I find it a very welcoming environment and the staff are always friendly. The only disappointing point would be the coffee. Every time I'm in I order an Americano and every time the coffee has tasted bitter and burnt. It's a shame because its such a nice wee place. Maybe staff could have some coffee training?

Abominable music. Very cliché.
Lots of good books.
Average Scottish "coffee" eg: a latte in a mug actually a very sad looking cappuccino/flat white.
Sandwiches poor - bacon was cheap shortcuts and burnt. No butter. No salad dressing or chutney on side. Served with some crisps!
Albeit, this is still one of the best cafes in Aberdeen as it's unique and original.
Let's just hope people's standards improve.

Located in busy Belmont Street this is a great spot to have lunch , meet friends or browse a few books. Interesting soups , good service and fair prices Books and Beans is well worth a visit . Aberdeen is full of branded cafes , this one deserves some local support for trying to compete against the steady march of sameness.

This place has all the potential to be really really special, in a city that is not so rich with lovely cafes, and most of which close way too early (some as early as 3pm on the weekend, leaving one little options and a choice between full blown restaurants or loud alcohol bars, nothing much in between). The positives include quite a fabulous selection of different sweets, and what looked like the base for various sandwich fillings. The floor to ceiling shelves full of old books add lovely atmosphere and it was nice enough ambience, though much nicer and cosier upstairs than downstairs where they leave front windows open so it blows a gale in winter (it being, what appears, the only air circulation in the space), not to mention stuck in 1972 bar/serving shelves which all look like they could do with a good scrub and clean. Signs like "dirty water only here" do not improve the impression.

We were only after some coffee/tea, the place was full, we were sent upstairs but struggled to find anywhere to sit, though we have already paid for our teas and had little choice but huddle somewhere in the cafe. Service was chaotic and not particularly friendly, and again, the whole place, including the upstairs area, looked like it could do with a really good clean. It felt sticky to just be there. The place has so much potential, such a pity it is not really realised by the current occupants.
