Description: Yatai Izakaya is an intimate local eatery with a casual atmosphere, modern Japanese food that practices traditional technique while utilizing the best ingredients that Aberdeenshire has to offer. As a small independent restaurant, we have honed traditional methods over the past ten years to create our own unique take on Japanese cuisine. Our staff are passionate and knowledgeable and inspired by Japanese culture and ingredients as well as locally available and seasonal ingredients.

Would highly recommend Yatai - delicious dishes, excellent service and a cosy atmosphere. Had heard good things about this restaurant, but was even better than expected. The restaurant has a great atmosphere with interesting Japanese decor combined with upbeat music. Staff were very attentive and helpful. We went for an Omakase menu and thoroughly enjoyed the array of delicious dishes that we were served. If you're not keen on surprises, I'm sure the staff would be only too happy to make some recommendations. A nice flask of Sake makes an excellent companion to the dishes and you can even buy some to take home as Yatai is apparently Scotland's only Sake off-licence! A bit more expensive than some other Aberdeen restaurants but well worth it. Can't wait to go back and try some more dishes!

We had never eaten Japanese (other than supermarket Sushi etc.) so thought we'd give this a go on a recent (first) visit to Aberdeen. Service was friendly and helpful and the general atmosphere perfectly pleasant. We broadly enjoyed mist of what we ordered...the sliced vegetable tempura, sweet potato teriyaki, lemon sole tempura and pork ribs were all lovely and would have been adequate for two...we had two other less successful dishes but there is something to suit all palates and just give your waiting staff honest data and they will keep you right. I enjoyed my first ever Saki...both dry - one cold and one hot and the honeycomb and Hakushu (Japanese whiskey) ice cream was a good finish to the meal.

Two weird negatives: 10 minutes after getting there, I was called on my mobile by the restaurant asking if I was on my way! Also the decorative arrangement of twigs in the gents simply got in the way of having a pee and washing your hands!

Yatai Izakaya is a small but very enjoyable restaurant to dine at. With a very authentic menu. Highly recommended for couples, i don't think it is a venue for large crowds as the restaurant is small which gives the place a cosier atmosphere. Most of the kitchen is open plan so the aromas that go through the restaurant from the open grill is nothing but mouthwatering. One of Aberdeen's best restaurants for sure!

We visited to celebrate our daughter's birthday and had a pleasant evening. We went for the 'surprise' menu and generally found the food good/very good but portions a little light. As I have eaten Japanese several times in the past I was not surprised at the portion size.
Would visit again but at £25/head min would not go with the 'surprise' menu.

Found them after another recommendation and a bit of searching. And it was well worth the effort. From the first very friendly and genuine greetings, to the delicious range of dishes through the knowledgeable advice on choices and to the prompt service. Brilliant! Seek them out!
