“Don't bring your wife”
Reviewed October 27, 2012

This hostel is busy as Aberdeen is an expensive place to stay. But it definitely does not deserve four STB stars. The bed are actually pretty good. And the building is spacious and attractive with some parking.
But - The toilets and showers are not kept clean, and there is often no toilet roll. The showers are unpredictable. The basins frequently have two identical taps, giving no clue as to which is hot.
In the kitchen there is a shortage of dish towels and in the toilets no paper towels.
The staff seem all to be very helpful but are apparently unequal to the task of maintaining reasonable standards of maintenance and hygiene. Sizeable gaps in the windows and skirting mean the dining room is cold.
The place desperately needs some TLC .

Dont waste your money on this hostel, there are a lot of B&B for the same price with Breakfast included and the hospitality is much better. No free internet, you have to pay 3£ per hour, no towels in the room, no tv, simple bathroom and its not a good location...20 minute walking to the city centre...thats not worth 50£ for me.

Stayed here for one night on the way to Inverness and found hostel to be comfortable. Stayed in a private room with shared bathroom and found everything to be quite clean including the large kitchen. Hostel has 2 large common areas with book exchange in one and a TV in the other. Short walk into town approx 10mins with access to about 4 supermarkets.

Aberdeen is no Edinburgh and does not have much in the way of a tourist industry. As a result the amount of reasonably priced places to stay in Aberdeen are very limited. After being quoted some ridiculously high figures for B&B accommodation I opted to stay in this hostel for the best part of 2 weeks (due to a work placement) and I have to be honest and say it was pretty good. It has a fairly big kitchen and dining area and decent shower/toilet facilities which I am happy to say were cleaned regularly. The room I was in had 2 bunk beds so 4 sleeping berths in total but it was never totally full on any night. I think they purposefully try and keep each room to about 2 people if at all possible. The beds were clean, decent quality and I managed to sleep quite well. The main 'problem' of course with youth hostels is always the other people you might encounter there. I did have a couple of 'odd' room mates over the course of the 2 weeks (some of whom arrived in the middle of the night) but for the most part people there were friendly and kept to themselves. There were occasional noise disturbances during the night but these were few and far between and mostly occurred (predictably) on the weekend. Most of the people staying at this youth hostel seemed to be working in Aberdeen rather than bonafide tourists/backpackers although there were some of the latter. The staff were fine, one female staff member being particularly friendly and helpful. There is a small supermarket (Co-op) about 5 minutes walk away and the main town is only about 15 minutes walk but there are plenty of buses if you don't fancy walking. My only complaint would be that there are no sockets in any of the rooms which is annoying if you have a laptop/phone that needs to be charged (although you can do that downstairs). The Internet charges are also very high ( something like £1 for 20 minutes or £3 for an hour which is steep). All in all this is a good place to stay in if you are on a budget. I would stay in this place again if I needed a cheap place in Aberdeen. It's not the Ritz but it has everything you need, is clean and I felt comfortable and safe the whole time I stayed there.

Lovely hostel in an interesting building and quite a peaceful district. Pity there aren't any shops, pubs and restaurants but there's a bus stop right outside the hostel. Good cooking facilities. We enjoyed visiting Old Aberdeen and the harbour. Friendly and helpful managers.

Good hostel; spacious and clean kitchen, dining room, lounges etc. Located in a large mansion with gardens. A bit of a hike from the city centre.
