The representation of conditions of the gaol where criminals were shackled and tortured is very realistic. Compared that that modern prisons are hotels! No wheelchair access.

The Tolbooth gives a gruesome insight into life in the city's 17th century gaol. The narrow spiral stairs and creepy cells are now free of inmates but the stories of torture, hardship, survival and escape live on through the various and engaging displays. The man on the reception desk was enthusiastic and chatty. Be prepared to climb quite a few steps.

Quite interesting to see, although has a spiral staircase which is very steep in parts and only a rope to hold on to, so not for the frail or fainthearted. Staff were lovely though and very informative

I was fortunate enough to come here on a winters night when there was a full blown storm raging outside. It sits right on the harbour and gives a real sense of atmosphere. The food is sublime, the restaurant is classy and the service is exceptional. Could not find a single fault. Fantastic Evening!

We found visiting the Tolbooth very interesting. My 6 year old found it a bit overwhelming and was scared but the elder 2 boys enjoyed the visit. The man at the reception desk was very friendly and informative and chatted to the kids about the Tolbooth. I wouldn't recommend it for folks with small kids or any health issues due to the steep spiral stair case you need to climb. Overall a good place to spend an hour.
