“Like hotels used to be”
Reviewed January 20, 2009

Despite a mix-up with our booking I found this a great place to stay - excellent central location, but not noisy. Courteous, friendly and very helpful staff (that all seemed to speak fluent English).

We had a very nice suite with a fold out bed for a child in the second room.

The room was nice, a decent size - recently refurbished I think, bed very comfy, even the fold out one, 2 nice big flat screen tellies with some extra channels (although picture not brilliant), coffee machine, you could open the windows and adjust the radiators. Bathroom stylish - although the shower was more style than substance. Room service was available 24 hours and didn't seem too over-priced.

Very nice breakfast.

I had a few small niggles which I think were mostly related to the room being given at short notice due to the booking mix-up.

Parking seemed a bit pot luck - I think the hotel wasn't busy as we managed to get a free space in the small hotel car park down a lane at the back.

Not cheap, but good value I think. Hadn't skimped on the things the budget hotels have cut out - still has things like writing paper in the rooms and sewing kits.

The Thistle has an enviable location and the view from the window was lovely.

The staff are very helpful, and friendly but were let down rather by management. The first morning's breakfast it took 30 minutes to be seated and have coffee. The following day there was a buffet and it worked a lot better.

We stayed in a refurbished room (110). It was clean, attractive, with comfortable beds and a lovely looking shower. The shower had two heads, a huge one and a smaller hand held power shower. Unfortunately the large head only had cold water, and the power shower only went as high as luke warm, despite pushing in the "it gets hot after this" button on the handle. Curiously the sink was hot.

Since I expect the basics, cleanliness, comfortable beds, and hot water from any hotel the thistle would not be my first or even second choice next time.

Well equipped single room. Firm but comfortable bed. Spotless bathroom. Friendly staff. Although a Friday night, very quiet and peaceful sleep!

This is not a 4 star hotel. Having travelled quite a lot, you become used to certain standards and this hotel is lacking in most of them. I know the hotel is going through a refurbishment and have taken that into account with my comments. Until the refurb is completed, I would book somewhere else.

On arrival, we were checked in quite quickly, which was good. We then went to park the car in the hotel's free parking at the back of the hotel. It was late when we arrived and there was no lighting in the car park. Maybe that explained the driver who had taken up almost two spaces with bad parking. We asked the receptionist to find who owned the car and ask them to move their car into one space. After checking the records, we were told that the number plate didn't match anyone staying in the hotel so there was nothing that could be done. When we checked in, we weren't asked for our number plate so the hotel clearly isn't very organised when it comes to this.

Our room on the fourth floor was definitely not one that had been refurbished. It had a strange odour that lingered all weekend. The bed, while comfortable, was quite small for a 4 star hotel and had stained sheets. The bed was on wheels so whenever we sat on the bed, it moved, knocking into the bed side tables.

The bathroom was awful. It obviously used to be bigger but it had been cut in half, down the middle, to make way for the utility cupboard that was taking up the other half of the bathroom. It was very narrow and not easy to use. This meant we lost half the window and couldn't open it to air the bathroom. The bathroom became very steamy after a shower in the narrow bath, so we couldn't use the mirror. There was also a serious lack of toiletries, which you wouldn't expect in a 4 star hotel.

Breakfast was pleasant but the service was terrible. We arrived at 9.30am, one hour before service was due to finish. The room was quiet but we had to sit in the lobby for 5 minutes so the staff could clear some tables. When we did get a table, you could see the staff were not used to working quickly to clear tables and re-set them. One table behind us had left over plates and cups sitting on it for the entire time we were there. There was also supposed to be apple and cranberry juice, but they weren't there and when I asked for some, the waitress went to ask but never came back.

The place just seemed so disorganised, with no-one in charge and not able to keep up the standards you would expect either from this chain or from any other 4 star hotel. We got a deal on the price before we booked and this was the only thing the hotel had going for it. Do some research and get a better deal somewhere else.

Although it was still being renovated the Caledonian was a great base. Newly refurbished rooms very comfortable, staff brilliant, good -but limited - breakfast. Good bar with great value and very good food. Strangely though, no whisky on room service menu!

We have just returned from a visit to Aberdeen and stayed at this hotel. I would highly recommend this for a break. We had booked two rooms and both were off a very high standard and very comfortable. The staff who dealt with us were polite and accommodating. We did not have dinner in the hotel so cant comment on this, but there was a buffet style breakfast that had something for everyone. Before and after checkout we were able to leave our bags leaving us free to explore the city. If travelling by train, then the hotel is only a short distance from the station. I would have no hesitation in booking a stay here in the future.
