“4 star hotel , big disappointment”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 21, 2011

Well what a let down the Caledonian thistle hotel was, certainly not worth its 4 stars and not anywhere as good as its 3 star sister hotel on the outskirts where I have stayed on numerous occassions.
The check in process was so frustrating. We arrived half an hour early(130pm, check in is from 2pm) so being told our room wasnt ready was fine and we walked onto Union street for lunch. Arriving back at the hotel at 230pm we were told our room still wasnt ready and we were sent to the bar to wait and to be fair was given a complimentary drink. Another hour and a quarter passes before we finally got the key to our room, 345pm, not a good start and watched numerous others check in quickly and problem free.
We were supossedly 'upgraded' to their executive room on the 4th floor. We had booked a twin room and the second bed was a sofa bed which had been made up, whats that all about?? some upgrade...NOT.
There was so much noise outside at night that it kept both of us awake into the early hours. Even went to Boots the next morning for earplugs but they didnt help much!!
The shower in the room was terrible also. Double size shower with a lovely huge head on the shower but just a small glass side panel and water just went everywhere, had to put towels down to stop the laminate floor getting soaked.
I'm afraid the phrase 'fur coat and no knickers' comes to mind when describing the upgraded rooms.
The only positive here is the breakfast, only one word.....Fantastic!
But I'm afraid I was totally disappointed by this hotel and my stay certainly wasn't worth the money for a supposedly 4 star hotel, and theres a letter to reflect this on its way to head office!

First impressions were not great. Room 105 was probably the smallest hotel room I've experienced in my life, and it was hot, and an open window let in the sound of an air conditioner all night. However, a cheerful, smiling front desk moved me to bright and airy room 109, with a nice view of Union Terrace Gardens. Breakfast was pretty good too, along with the usual suspects were Scottish specialities of haggis and blood sausage - Yummy Tummy indeed! Did I say it had free [city center] parking as well.

Room Tip: Say no to room 105!

This hotel is in a great location-off the main shopping street facing lovely city gardens. The staff particular those in reception were friendly and professional from start to finish. We were given a complimentary upgrade to a deluxe room on the 4th floor which was spacious, spotless with a great open view out onto city. The room had everything you needed. Shower was excellent. Being an older building we enjoyed the grand staircase and interesting public rooms downstairs-all recently refurbished by the looks of it and gives off a welcoming feel. Breakfast was buffet style and you could sit anywhere over 3 areas. Very good choice and the food was very fresh. We got a very good deal on this hotel made sweeter by how good a place this is to stay.

After booking a so called four/five star hotel, we arrived to find that there was an additional option to 'upgrade' to one of the newer rooms. We opted not to, and I have to say that I regret that decision.
The room was nice although very dirty. The bath/shower had orange skum around it and the taps were covered in some kind of algae!! The bedroom was ok but a bit dated. It had everything required but I have stayed in nicer 3 star hotels. I'm assuming that as the option to have a newer room was available that the hotel are in the process of refurbishment.
If you do decide to stay here, ask for a new room!

I stayed here with my 8-year-old daughter, as we were coming to visit the ballet. The hotel was spotlessly clean, tidy, very well laid out, with fantastic facilities. We had a twin room, which came complete with en-suite, towels, flatscreen tv, fridge, safe, iron and ironing board, etc. The room was spotlessly clean and tidy, well laid out, with an amazing view over the city.
We ate in the bar downstairs, both for dinner and breakfast, and the meals were lovely, and a good size. Breakfast was a typical buffet style, with plenty of choice, and it was all freshly made.
All the staff were friendly, happy and helpful, nothing was too much trouble for them, and everything was done with a smile.
I would recommend this hotel to anybody, and can't wait to make a return visit.

We have stayed in this hotel 4 times now and I can only praise the management for running a very clean tidy hotel. The staff are very friendly and helpful. My son was not happy with the view from his room and was therefore changed with no problem. We have not dined at the hotel so cannot comment on the food but as it is situated in the heart of Aberdeen there are lots of good resturants near by. We will definatly be back.

Staff were lovely and reception very nice. When checking in, we were informed that we had been upgraded from a standard double to a deluxe double suite and were to get free breakfast, everything free of charge which was a lovely surprise. Room was beautiful, very modern and beautifully decorated. Facilities were excellent and bed was extremely comfy. My only complaint would be that maybe the windows need to be updated as they do not block the noise very well considering the hotel is on a busy main road, but did not take away from the stay. Would highly reccommend
