A short stroll from King's College the Cathedral has an interesting graveyard as the rave stones are very close together and would be interesting to sketch. The inside is serene and the ceiling superb.

Absolutely gorgeous Cathedral soaked in History. Beautiful stained glass windows and granite peaks on the outside of building. Check the history before going but make sure you go see this as its a must when in aberdeen

When you enter St Machar's Cathedral you are at once impressed by the warmth of the building's atmosphere. There is peace, calm and a sense of history in these old stones. The Cathedral has been able to trace its priests and ministers from the foundation of the building and they are recorded just inside the building beside the south porch where you will also find really useful guides to the magnificent heraldic ceiling which traces the history of Europe and Scotland in the painted bosses. There are also some beautiful staned glass windows - Victorian and more modern by Strachan and Wilson. Several memorials grace the walls of the church and there is a lovely little chapel where you can spend a moment in prayer and quiet reflection
The surrounding churchyard especially at the east end of the Cathedral (the ruined part) is very interesting with some notable graves. The area immediately beside the Cathedral has some elegant old houses which are worth a look.

Talk about double luck!! When we arrived at the Cathedral a wedding was just concluding and the wedding party was departing just as it had been at the Kings College Chapel an hour before. We entered the cathedral after the wedding party had left. The cathedral is magnificent and a "must" to visit. The old church yard is very interesting and we actually found the graves of several of my wife's ancestors.

My grandparents came to the United States from Aberdeen. My mother and aunts had been to St. Machar's Cathedral several years ago and found many gravestones with the family name. My sister and I found the cathedral to be absolutely beautiful, and we enjoyed our visit.
