“The Carmelite is not "green"”
Reviewed August 10, 2013

If your are fed up waiting for a seat at one of the many restaurants at Union Square (i.e. not fed up at all) why not try the Carmelite in the nearby Green (visitors may need a little help in finding the place, but it is just at the bottom of a flight of stairs from Union Street. The tapas-style menu was great and so was the pianist in the lounge bar.

“Go somewhere else if you are Vegetarian”
Reviewed August 10, 2013

We had a voucher as a wedding anniversary gift, told them I was vegetarian when I booked. Only had vegetarian curry (nothing like a proper curry - vegetables & sauce with hard rice & salty poppadum) on the menu we could use with the voucher no dessert (had gelatine in it) - told us we could come back next week to use voucher & order off main menu to get something different (money making or what?) and they could only make a stewed fruit & sorbet for my dessert instead, which was so horrible, worst thing I have ever tried, chef's answer to my complaint about dessert was he tasted it the day before & it was fine! Really disappointed should of been a lovely evening with my husband - will NEVER be going back. Shame there is no negative ratings.

“Coffee & Cake on a Sunday afternoon”
Reviewed August 7, 2013

Stopped in past the Carmelite for a coffee on a Sunday afternoon whilst shopping in town. Friendly welcome, and swift, efficient service from the front of house staff. Comfy seats and a lovely atmosphere, there was a guy playing piano and singing, which was a nice touch. We were offered a selection of cakes with our coffee, which we agreed to order, it came as 4 bite sized fancies, which were nice. We had a lovely visit but my only bugbear was the shelving behind us at the back of the room was MINGING! The layer of dust was actually just ridiculous. How the cleaners don't notice it, I do not know. It's very obvious. Please please sort that out, then my rating would be near to 100%! :-)

“Good food but dangerous fish cake”
Reviewed July 19, 2013

3 of us ate here in July and we all chose different items from the menu and we all agreed that the food was really good. The restaurant was quite quiet for a Friday evening and the service was good and friendly. Starters were excellent and so were the main courses but my fish cake was lethally hot, my mouth is still blistered the following day. We used an "Itson voucher" and got 3 two course meals plus a bottle of red, priced at £18, for £35. ( Total without voucher would have been £69) What a great deal, even with my burnt mouth. As for the pianist, it was brilliant to hear his interpretation of rock songs you would never expect to hear played solo on piano.
