Attraction details
Owner description: The Museum of Free Derry recently re-opened its doors in the Bogside following a £2.4m redevelopment and offers a full multi-media exhibition on the civil rights and early conflict era in the city, including Battle of the Bogside, Internment, Bloody Sunday and Operation Motorman. The museum was established by the Bloody Sunday Trust in 2006 to tell the story of the civil rights movement and the creation of Free Derry in the 1960s and 1970s, and it has become an important part of Ireland’s radical and civil rights heritage. It tells the story of how a largely working class community rose up against the years of oppression it had endured. The struggle of Free Derry is part of a wider struggle in Ireland and internationally for freedom and equality for all.

“Best Museum in Derry”

This museum is staffed by relatives of the Bloody Sunday massacre. All of the displays in the museum are remarkable and include many different types such as videos, photographs and clothing with bullet holes. I was very moved by the museums and I couldn't get many of the displays out of my mind after I left.

Very well presented and gives a real personal insight into life in Derry during the Troubles. The video and audio footage is harrowing. Well worth a visit.

Very informative. The video of Blood Sunday really puts you on the scene and explains what happened. Definitely worth a visit.

“Shocking But Don't Miss!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 31, 2013

Relatively small museum with a huge story to tell about events leading up to a day that shocked the world and the years spent waiting for those involved to admit the truth.

You can easily spend a couple of hours here so really good value at £3.

The story is told in a very dignified way via a series of wall panels, original video footage and some iconic artefacts, it will both sadden you and chill you to the bone even though its over 40 years since these events.

“Astonishing history lesson”

If you are in Derry you have to go to this museum. The photographic history alone is amazing as is some of the video footage. It certainly provides a great perspective on the The Troubles
