“A very pleasant experience”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 23, 2013

Derry is my home town so this was the first time I ever stayed in a hotel there. Very welcoming and friendly staff, helpful service, a comfortable, well-appointed room with a beautiful view over the Foyle and the Peace Bridge.

We stayed in the 'Hume' Suite on the 7th floor - I had booked a room in the City Hotel as part of my husband's birthday present as we were going to the Status Quo concert in The Venue Ebrington (hich was a 5 minute walk over the newly constructed Peace Bridge. We were upgraded into the 'Hume Suite' - absolutely beautiful. The room key card gives lift access to the 7th floor. Each room/suite door is like your own front door, decor is beautiful, rooms are immaculate - jacuzzi bath, massive power shower, beautiful bedroom with the most comfortable bed I have slept in and great views over the Foyle River. Smart TV in living area and bedroom. Free WiFi through Bitbuzz. Service was impeccable, so friendly and staff went out of their way to be helpful. My husband even had a birthday card awaiting his arrival in the room from the hotel. Two minute walk to city centre, Car parking wasn't available at the hotel but there is a secure multi story car park next door which is discounted and can be validated at the hotel reception - alot cheaper than I was expecting. A/C available if needed! A real buzz about the city.

Room Tip: Request a room overlooking River Foyle.

This is the second time we have stayed here,on the first occasion my Husband booked it for a break he requested a quite room as we had been through quite a lot in the last year and would of liked a relaxing weekend but because we were put above a function room we had to be asked to move at 11pm at night. On the second time my Husband was taking part in the Walled Marathon at 8.30am the next morning so again we requested a quite room because of this and the Hotel being one of the sponsors they would understood the request for the quite room, but again that never happened there was a wedding on and the band didn't stop until 1am.We had booked the hotel months in advance so there was no excuses for not consider our request,We also tried to got a late check out until 2pm because my Husband would of liked to take a shower after the Marathon before we headed home but it was going to cost an extra £30.We have stayed in a lot of Hotels over the past few years and I Would honestly say we wont be booking to stay here again.

Stayed one night while in Derry for work.
Hotel is located very centrally - 2 minute walk from city centre.
Rooms are fine - pretty standard. There is free wi-fi through Bitbuzz. They also have a car park.
There is a small gym and a decent size swimming pool.
I didn't eat in the restaurant but I did have breakfast which was good.
Overall would recommend for a business stop over.

like most people reading this , I have stayed in tonnes of hotels all over the world - but I have never had such attentive , helpful but not intrusive staff attend to every request . I stayed 3 days and everyone was brilliant - especially front desk . I have to admit I never expected a hotel in Derry to have such attention to detail
Do stay - i even moved rooms which was no trouble to them whatsoever . if you are fussy - this place is v good ! The only people who didn't continue this level of service were the people who looked after the gym....not sure they realise they are there to help ?

Room Tip: go to the front over the river

Stayed at the hotel with family for a business meeting in Eglinton

The hotel is well appointed, with smart public areas. Check-in was easy enough, and I was fortunate to get a parking space in the underground despite the sign saying it was full. The car park is incredibly tight to negotiate, and not for the faint of heart!!!
The room was comfortable, but no more than that. The fixtures and fittings seemed tired and in need of a spruce up.
Breakfast was very nice, although not very much choice with the hot food. Otherwise ok.

Now for the negatives - information at reception was confusing/inaccurate. When we asked about swimming times for children, we were told kids could only swim between 10am and 7pm, but the information in room says 7-7, and we were only given one room key. This is a potential problem given that you need a key in the room to keep the electricity turned on. So when I needed to return to the car, my family were plunged into darkness before I returned! Finally, we were not fortunate to have an out-facing room, ours facing inwards and the noise of a turbine/fan running all night made for a very uncomfortable night's sleep for us all.

In summary, an OK stay, but I'm sure it could have been better.

My husband and I decided to treat ourselves to a Northern Ireland 2 night break and chose Derry firstly because we hadn't been before, secondly because it is the City of Culture for this year and last, but by no means least, because Phil Coulter and Friends were in concert. We were extremely lucky to get accommodation in City Hotel and from start to finish it was a wonderful and memorable experience. Without requesting it we were allocated an upgrade to an executive room. Each room on this recently opened 7th floor had a theme and each one had a house front door giving the overall impression of a street. When we opened the door we could scarcely believe our eyes....the quality, exquisite interior design to include overall style, colour schemes, quality of furnishings and fittings and the general relaxing ambience which the colour scheme exuded. The bathroom was equally as beautiful with Jacuzzi bath, excellent shower, fluffy towels, dressing gowns and slippers. We found this whole atmosphere permeated throughout the hotel and extended to staff who were always very willing to serve their guests in whatever way they could. Receptionists Laura and Denise are especially worthy of mention. An overall excellent experience and the icing on the cake was sitting back with Phil Coulter and Friends. An A* all round!
