“Friendly Hotel but not 4 star”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 13, 2011

Both the reception staff were very friendly and efficient. The hotel was very busy but we were dealt with quickly.

The room was large but was no better fitted out than a budget hotel. In addition the room was showing signs of a hard life with paintwork damaged and cracks in the walls. The bathroom lighting was very poor and I could not see to shave in the mirror.

The internet access is free but you need to get a code from reception which was not advised on arrival.

On returning to the hotel in the evening about 11pm there was a live singing act on in the lobby, the sound of which carried through most of the hotel. This put us off having a drink in the bar. Many of the pubs around here have singers on as well, but at least you can choose not to go in.

The breakfast was not of the standard expected of a 4 star hotel. The sausages in particular were very cheap looking and heavily spiced to disguise the poor taste of the meat.

I stayed here with my husband at the end of August for a couple of nights break. Staff were lovely. Rooms comfortable. We had a front view, so it was over looking the Peace Bridge. Food was really nice. Breakfast was served until 10am. Was able to get parked in the hotel car park even no the full sign was up. You had to wear a swimming hat if you wanted to use the pool but we were told as we just wanted to try out the Sauna and hot tub we didnt need any. Gym looked good but didnt use it. Would stay in again if i was going back to Derry.

I stayed here for 3 nights on a business trip & found it very comfortable. I had to work from my room a lot and felt there was more than enough space to do this without turning my room into an office.

The food was great room sevice was promt and fair priced. Breakfast was served until 10am and there was plenty to choose from.

The staff were very friendly and polite. Although my room was clean I felt the bathroom could be cleaner as there were dirty marks down the bath panel.

I had a front facing room on the 5th floor with a lovely view but it was quite noisy with the traffic.

The car park is very small which I found to be a pain.

Stayed at the City Hotel in September 2011, we paid a bit extra for a deluxe room and we were disappointed. The room was large and generally clean and had a great view of the river Foyle and the new peace bridge. The decor was bland and felt like an office with a bed, the room showed lots of wear and tear and the bathroom was fairly basic. We were on the 5th floor and there was lots of noise until very late from the bar and function rooms on the ground floor. The staff generally appeared to have a couldn’t be bothered attitude. The lobby and restaurant etc are quite smart but the bar was very packed and noisy. The bed and pillows were both quite uncomfortable and neither of us got a good nights sleep when the noise died down.

Went down for breakfast at 10am and had to wait in the lobby for around 20 mins before we could get a seat, really not good enough as there where seats available but these where for parties of more than 2. Breakfast was fine when we got it, but when we asked for tea an coffee the waiter didnt even acknowledge our request and a little bit later just plonked down the pots on the table without a comment.

I have used the hotel in the past a number of years ago for work but the rooms certainly appear to need an urgent refurbishment. Won’t be back and will use the Everglades Hotel or the Waterfoot Hotel in future.

We spent 2 nights here and got virtually no sleep due to hardness of the matress which totally spoilt our trip as we had little energy following days to do much.I did request a change of mattress but dont know if it was forgotten or ignored as second night was worse than first. The hotel itself was nice, food excellent and staff marvellous --- it was such a shame about the bed ! It would totally put me off staying there again.

stayed at this hotel the staff were exceptional good and couldn't do enough for us. However the morning after we arrived we were rudely awoken by road works at the front of the hotel at the ungodly hour of 7am. We realise this is outside of the hotel control but the whole point of this trip was to have a relaxing break. As well as this the whole sixth floor on which we were staying was like a sauna and after about 5 minutes are clothes were sticking to us because it was so hot.

In addition to this the steam room next to the pool was not working for the whole of are stayed. This hotel is good for conferences and business functions but for a romantic get away i would not recommend it.

Thank you for taking the time to review the City Hotel. As you mentioned the road works outside the hotel are unfortunately out of our control and were only for a short time. Our leisure centre steam room was also temporarily closed for a short period and has since reopened. We apologise for this closure during your stay. We do hope you will come and stay with us again soon.

Stayed at the City Hotel in Derry, it is okay. First of all the one redeeming feature was Keeva, she was extremely pleasant, helpful and really went out of her way to ensure that all questions were answered and that we enjoyed our time in Derry. Her recommendations for tours, directions, etc were spot on.
Unfortunately she was the only helpful member we encountered at the front desk. The remainder of the staff, and there were plenty of people "working" treated questions with annoyance and we felt we were imposing on their time. Having working in tourism for 20 years we realize that questions can become a bit tiresome by the end of tour season but rudeness to guests is never the answer.
The breakfast buffet was adequate. However the dining room didn't open until 7:00 a.m. and 7:30 on weekends. This made early departures a bit of a rush, particularly when there were 50 tour passengers attempting to devour breakfast before their 8:00 a.m. departure.
Having to acquire an internet code for one hours service is something the hotel needs to address. First of all it is annoying, and furthermore it meant more encounters with the unfriendly desk staff - something we tried to avoid unless we could speak with Keeva.
The location of the hotel is ideal, and the city has plenty to offer, but would likely look for another staff friendly hotel for future visits.

Further to your review of the City Hotel, thank you for taking the time to feedback to us. In Northern Ireland the City Hotel has won awards for 3 years running for customer service within the front office team so it is very rare that we would experience negative feedback relating to our staff. We often get compliments on how helpful and friendly the team are so i was surprised to read your review. I certainly will feedback to all of the team. Regarding the internet we do offer guests an hour complimentary internet access. We hope you will return to the City Hotel and stay with us again.
