We decided to take this train hourney after reading the reviews here - but in the end felt that it was over-rated. there were a few great views but these were fleeting. We drove down the same route the next day and found that the views from the road were better and we could stop where we wanted

The train station at Derry is very pretty and the initial part of the journey parallel to the river was pretty. The short stretch parallel to the Brenone strand was extremely beautiful too. It was interesting to see the long stretches of grass farms - this was the first time we saw how the grass turf rolls available at garden centres are cultivated!

When compared to our drive along the Giant's Causeway Coastal Route which from Derry to Coleraine takes a similar route to the train, the drive was much better.

We usually travel by train from Derry to Colraine at least twice a month its a great journey and now that the line has been renewed a lot smoother.
Coleraine is a well kept town with a very plesant atmosphere that we enjoy very much.
As we are both 65+ of course the free travel is a great help when the wander lust takes us, my wife thinks probably rightly that I was born a wanderer.

Reading the blurbs about this 45 minute railway run we were really expecting something exciting. It was nice, very nice, but nothing I would call spectacular, by world class scenic railway standards. You get to see a bit of Lough Foyle, then the Atlantic sea coast, and a few unspectacular hills, and through two fairly short tunnels that's about it.

Much more spectacular is the train journey going south from Dublin to Wexford, especially where it runs along the sea coast from Booterstown to Dun Laoughaire, and soon after that along Killiney Bay - known as the "Naples of Ireland" but in much better condition than the Naples of Italy.

What I found really impressive was a very large sign in the lovely little Raiway Station on the banks of the Foyle in Derry city. It was a consultation process with the public regarding 4 options for the refurbishment or relocation of the railway station, giving the advantages and disadvantages of each option. Derry is a great city to visit, is very community-oriented, and I felt many public services could imitate this initiative.

The costliness from City of Derry to Coleraine is some of the most beautiful stretch of rail journey. The line starts by running along side the river Foyle from Derry and passes lisahally where the captured German U Boats were held after surrendering. These were later scuttled off the mort coast. The line continues up along Lough Doyle and then turns east along beautiful Castlerock beach and into Portstewart. The train takes 2 hrs to get to Belfast so not fast but you could make a day orbit and visit the Titanic museum in Belfast.
