“Northern Treasure”
Reviewed January 26, 2014

Just returned from a two day stay in The Beech Hill Country House Hotel in Derry. This hotel was the former base for the US Marines during WW2 and some of their Nissen type huts still remain in the hotel grounds. A Museum room gives full information on the Marines time in Northern Ireland and the hallways are liberally decorated with photographs of various Marines and events of the time. I spent some time looking at photos and reading up on the history of the time and to top it all off I trained like a marine (not) with a few walks and runs through the many walking trails in the grounds of Beech Hill. But enough of the history lesson and on to the Hotel. From the moment we arrived to a warm and friendly welcome we felt right at home at this hotel. Check-in was flawless and we were shown to the room which was downstairs so views were limited. This room was given to us because we had a small dog with us and the room was very suitable as it was located beside an outside door that led to the hotel grounds so doggy was happy. The room itself was perfect with the largest and most comfortable bed I have ever slept in. There was an ensuite bathroom with great shower Lots of storage facilities. If I had one gripe it was that there was a distinct shortage of clothes hangers but there was sufficient drawer storage. We did not ask for more hangers but I'm sure we would have got some if we had done so. Now to the food. As we had booked dinner on both nights we were hoping that the food was all that previous reviews had said it was. We needed have no fears in that regard. The dinner was divine. Starters were excellent, I had the foie gras pate on both nights while my wife had goat cheese salad one night and a mushroom risotto the other night. Main course was duck and steak for myself and salmon and shoulder of lamb for my wife. Good selection of desserts on the menu and my favourite was the selection of ice cream and sorbets. All food was served by attentive and friendly staff as was our pre and after dinner drinks in the comfortable lounge. The breakfast each morning was beautiful with a great selection of food as well as the standard full Irish. All in all we would highly recommend a stay in the Beech Hill House and we will definitely be back

Had a two night break at the Beech Hill. From arrival to departure, we were completely looked after by every member of staff. They were universally polite, pleasant and friendly. Food in the restaurant was delicious, and when there wasn't a vegetarian option on the menu, the chef whipped up a delicious risotto with fantastic arancini on top. At no point was this made to feel like a problem; the staff seemed delighted to be able to help.

Breakfast was similarly delicious, with a good selection. The rooms are perhaps a little dated, although the shower was powerful and there was a large flatscreen tv, and the bed was huge, so this is a minor criticism.

Really, the Beech Hill is somewhere to enjoy the ambiance: it's a quirky building, with a museum dedicated to the story of the US marines stationed there during WWII, and a charming lounge with roaring fires. Delighted to see Samuel Adams on tap; a rare treat!

Ambience is everything.
The reception were very welcoming.
The hall was nicely decorated with christmas decorations.
We were escorted to our room which was a mile away from reception.
It didn't matter. the room was huge. Bed magnificent. Bathroom neat and clean. Towels too small.
We stayed for dinner because of the rain and winds- good decision. the early evening menu is giood value and the food very good. I took the Salmon followed by apple crumble. It tasted as though the chef really cared.
Breakfast was excellent - Muesli with fresh fruits- Ulster fry and pain au chocolat. Excellent flavours and a view over the lake and mill wheel.
We came back to the hotel for afternoot tea which was nearly as good as the Ritz in London.
Sitting at teh warm fire- there was no better way to spend a winter evening.
i'd recommend it to anybody!

Room Tip: Room 58 overlooks the wedding Marquee.

My husband, myself and a friend stayed for New Year's Eve. Gourmet meal was beautiful, and served well on a very busy night Surroundings are great and staff were attentive. I had upgraded to a master suite. The suite was spacious and luxurious but to be picky I expected bath robes and the phone didn't work. Overall we had a lovely time in the cosy atmosphere and would definately recommend it to anyone.

What a great find in Derry, classic country house hotel, very spacious rooms, clean, attentive staff, lovely restaurant and bar, food was excellent, we were there on a very busy Christmas party night, staff were under pressure but very professional and attentive.

Room Tip: Great place for a special occasion

Heard so much good things about this place and I was really looking forward to our stay, however it was nothing special, it was actually one of the worst hotels I've ever stayed. Rooms were fine, could do with some new lick of paints but they were ok to stay a night or two. The staff were nice and friendly except this particular woman at the reception, she was old fashioned and rude. Maybe it's just me, when I stayed in hotels I would like to feel welcomed and not made to feel as I am intruding someone's life, to be fair the hotel was buzzing with a wedding party and there were few couples looking to view the place for the wedding however it still doesn't give excuses for rudeness. It's a nice hotel with plenty of history and rich characters but not for me.
