Owner description: Prehen House is one of the North West’s most historic buildings. Situated next to the famous woods, it commands stunning views of Derry, the river Foyle and the hills beyond.Prehen is intimately linked with the history of Derry. Records reveal that it was inhabited by 1640; in 1738 the Knox family began their great association with Prehen when Andrew Knox, the MP for Donegal married Honoria Tomkins, the Prehen heiress. In Victorian times the colourful Colonel George Knox was one of Derry’s most eminent figures. But with World War I looming his grandson Baron George Carl Otto Louis von Scheffler Knox was put under house arrest. Soon after the 3,641 acre estate was seized as ‘enemy property’.Happily, the house was brought back into another branch of the Knox family and today the North West has a wonderful heirloom forever linked with the history of the City

My mate & I visited 24.1.2012 really just to see the outside of the house.
Interior Viewing was off peak. Decorators were working in the interior.
Suddenly the door opened and we were greeted by a friendly hello , it turned out to be the owner Colin Peck who made us very welcome , a real gentleman..

We chatted about the history of the house , i really enjoyed it.
When we were about to depart Colin asked us if we would like a quick tour of the house of course we jumped at the invite .
What can i say , i was gobsmacked by what i seen , i congratulate Colin in his on his ongoing upkeep of the house .
Lderry should be proud to have this as a treasure.

“the people in charge are that ignorant we did not even get to see it”
Reviewed October 25, 2011

I phoned in advance and was told sunday at 3pm should be ok but to phone at 2pm to check. I phoned at 2pm but no one could be bothered to answer. I phone again at 2.20 and 2.30. I left messages on the mobile number and the landline.I went to the house in case there mobile had simply died. There was no one there.
If something had prevented them from providing the tour they simply had to answer the phone and say something to the effect 'sorry something has come up and we cannnot do the tour'
To simply ignore the phone when they knew we would be calling is just ignorant

“Amazing story/history....well worth the visit”
Reviewed June 28, 2011

Firstly this house is in mid-renovation, but DO NOT let that put you off visiting. We were met very informally by the current owner who lives there with his family and taken on a tour of the surrounding grounds and the interior of the house. Amazing history and story to this lovely old house, would make a great movie!! Really worth a visit.. (No fee just donations to help with renovation)
